So yes. I have been planning on moving out to the greatest city for some time. Las Vegas has been a second home for some time and has long ago captured my heart.

So as I plan this big jump I have to ask the folks on this board for some advice. I'm really very touched by the loyalty and passion that most people have for the city (even the negative comments are pretty passionate). I need those people to come forward and share their experiences.

Specifically, if you could identify the biggest mistakes that someone in my situation--someone planning on moving to Vegas--could make...what would they be? I'm not talking about the snide ("stay where you are") or the obvious ("don't move out here without getting a job first", "don't come out here if you have a gambling problem").

I'm talking about those jewels of wisdom that though the locals all know, most inbound people never hear about until they get out here and then say "if I only knew!". Like "never rent a downstairs apartment" or "Never try to get your utilities hooked up on the day after a holiday". THOSE sorts of things. The little snarls that can make a day flow easily (if avoided) or go on forever with frustrations.

Anyone want to share their ideas and experiences??

Don't park your U-Haul truck containing all your personal possessions in a private business's parking lot (even at an apartment complex) for very long unless you know for sure there is a WORKING security camera pointed at it. It is very vulnerable to being broken into.

Don't waste your time trying to get your money back from the casino's Customer Service reps after a long session at your favorite slot machine using an excuse like "I really didn't understand how this machine worked."

Don't buy a home that is at the end of a cul-de-sac and at the bottom of a hill. Your home could be flooded after a hard rain due to runoff water that runs down the street and pools around clogged storm drains in the cul-de-sac.

You will have to heat your outdoor swimming pool, so be aware of the alternatives for doing so.

A home with lots of south-facing windows will require that you (1) shade them from the outside, (2) cover them inside with plantation-style blinds, or (3) pay a heavy air conditioning bill in the summer.

In the summer, choose your destinations for errands based on the availability of shade for parking (even a small tree makes a difference). Park farther away from the store to gain a shaded spot. The time you spend walking back will be less than the time you would spend waiting for your car's interior to cool down from parking in an unshaded spot. And that little bit of extra exercise will do you good, unless the outdoor temp is above around 105 degrees, that is.
