When I started my home search 2 years ago all I got was zip codes. It drove me crazy. I finally got my hands on a map which had zip codes and locations such as south east west and etc. The other thing that was hard was someone just saying a certain zip code was bad to live in. These zip codes cover a vast area and many nice areas exist in them. The best way to deal with this is put the zip code in a search and see what areas it covers and then start searching the communities. It took me a while and some questions on here to figure it out.

That is what I did when I first moved here. I used the zip codes at first. Easier for me to remember numbers than names, but as I got more familiar I now use the cross streets.

Thank the Mormons. They laid it out.
Nah mostly PLSS - US Government. The original part of the city aligned with the RR. The rest though is on the US grid.

Some zip codes are in common usage. 89129 or 89131. Others go by master plan or subdivision name...Summerlin, Green Valley Ranch, Seven Hills, Mountains Edge, Alliante. Still other by geography..the Northwest. Sometimes by the County town...Spring Mountain or Sunrise (Actually Sunrise Manor but generally shortened).

People will also describe vaguely...west side, south east side.

Shortly after the Stratosphere was built a friend of mine said to me: " That thing couldn't be more phallic unless it shot water out of the top every hour".

If you can navigate Sahara, Charleston, Las Vegas Blvd, Rainbow, and Eastern, you can find most anything. Until you get to Summerlin or the Rancho area of NLV where we like to change street names and directions.

I agree with navigating based on the mountains. They are very distinctive. You may not know what street you are on, but you will always know which direction you are going.

hey Buzz, though I agree 89109 is pretty crummy, I live in Las Vegas Country Club in this area (wanted to be super close to the strip since I work there a lot) and thats in 89109...the thing I hate though is there is nowhere nice to eat or drink nearby thats not the strip (sans maybe firefly and a few places on paradise rd) not to derail, but has anyone been to the PTs pub on e.sahara and/or think the clientle there isnt scummy enough that I wouldnt want to eat or have a drink in there? once went to the bar down the st on karen ave and lets just say it wasnt pleasant

I read that the Mormons set up their fort and moved on to greener pastures in California(founded San Bernardino - a real "garden spot" - lol!).

Legend has it that Brigham Young saw an arrow in a dream and followed the vision to the base of the San Bernardino Mountains(where San Bernardino sits) and stopped there because he saw an arrow in the mountainside. That arrow formation is still there and near it is the lake and town called Lake Arrowhead.

The railroad came later and sold plots in what would later become Las Vegas and it seems that they would have had more to do with the grid layout then anyone.

Thanks for the confirmation.

I used to work in that zip code. Last time I checked (about six years ago) there were 142 registered sex offenders in that zip. Those were the law abiding sex offenders who bothered to register. It totally sucks too, because there are some really cool old apartments in that area. When I was much younger, my uncle used to live in a two story apartment / condo where one wall leading up to the loft was actual brick. (Architecture- in Vegas!) Some of the old places with the floor to ceiling windows look cool too. Maybe gentrification will happen at some point.

Yeh, I think the zip code thing is peculiar to this board or the internet in general. If you meet people in town you will get cross streets. If you live far from where someone is referencing then you will get the major East/west branch which is usually, Craig, Tropicana, Charleston and Lake Mead and the Major North/south branch usually Jones, Decatur, I15, The Strip, and Nellis. Maybe some others of course. I still the use the stratsophere, the strip, and the landing pattern of of incoming aircraft at LAS to get my bearings if I find myself lost.
