Wow what a bunch of ADHD this thread has. I worked in finance for a casino operator and 3 casino suppliers. No one started from the bottom. We didnt see a receptionist make it to VP or senior accountant. The closest thing to an office manager was an office manager before at a non-gaming business and had a degree from UNLV. This idea of raising up from the bottom may work for some departments where a lot of people dont have a formal education and succeed because they manage people well, but for much of the in house skilled departments the way you get a job is the same as anywhere else through education/skills and good work experience in almost any field. An accountant doesnt get their job from working the slot club counter and the network administrator doesnt use juice from being a janitor first.

mam, with all do respect, i would beg to differ.

if i am checking into a hotel or being served some chow I want a person to do it with courtesy and a smile. if they did it efficiently I would be even more pleased. but if a hot girl messed my order up but smiled, flirted, and made me feel good while doing so I wouldn't care in the slightest.

If you are managing my portfolio (well not mine because I am not rich) pounds, stink, and call me my by a name that's not my own. All I care about is if are you increasing my net worth...bottom line. if my portfolio manager is nice and sweet that's all the better, but it's not a deciding factor on who should manage your money.

vegas is not a serious city. yes I said it. there is no high finance or Bain & Co type firms there. apparently, from the bios posted above, there are a few people at the top of the industry who are serious people..forgive me for my use of the word serious. It's may be offensive, but you get my point.

yes, I was a war zone contractor where often the only qualification was a (claimed) skill set and a Top Secret security clearance so finding marginally qualified people willing to do the job in an active war zone dispensed with hr terms like "fit" and "corporate culture." And in a military enviorment you have to get along with everybody.

but I was also a consultant for a top 5--now defunct--management consulting firm and being sunny and positive to a back seat to being competent.

I am not saying that it did not matter, but, especially in niche groups, soft traits do not matter.

by all means if you are personable , pretty, positive, great. but not everybody is. and thank god that's the case for people like me. I am an average looking guy of below average social skills with above average intelligence. I have to work with what i have.

That's the problem. The people that are starting threads about casino employment are not listing their summary of credentials.

I have this much education...
These are my skills...
And my list if experiences are...
What do you guys and girls think would be a good fit for me?

Threads never start out like that above.

It's more of a "I want to move to Las Vegas. How can I get a job on the strip? Are they hiring?"

The best response for these people are "bottom up" answers.

They don't want answers. They want affirmation for their "move to Las Vegas" scheme.

Is this thread FINALLY back on topic? To answer the original question posed in order to get a PROFESSIONAL job in the casino I have only seen it done 2 ways.

1. Know someone
2. Literally fit every qualification they are looking for in the job description

One of the problems you will often find in hotel/resort management is when changes are made at the top, General Manager, Operations Manager etc these people often bring in others who worked with them at prior properties. I was moved from South Florida by a company who wanted my rooms manager talents badly in the Philly area. Within a year the General Manager was removed and then every manager was replaced by people known to the new management team. This scenario occurs everyday and in places like Las Vegas more often than you think. Go to sites like HCareers, Indeedonesearch etc and see how often positions open and always the same positions. Rooms Manager, Assistant GM, Food and Beverage Manager, Housekeeping Manger and really any supervisory position. I always say if you want to work in hotel management or similar be prepared to be replaced at any given time with no reason given. As for getting your foot in the door especially with the larger properties, you have to have some strong credentials from other properties or it will be difficult, not impossible.

Good luck in your search
