craigslist has a bunch of houses, online rental sites seem to be more condo/townhome/apt oriented. i found a ton of 2+ bdrm in the $1000 range...and i wasn't looking in the sketchy areas (although i did randomly find some areas that were a bit sketchy when looking).

I found a place on Horizon Ridge Pkwy in a beautiful complex for 895 a month. 2 bedroom with 1100 square feet and two baths. The city veiws off my balcony are breathtaking
Just check it out.

If you read anything I've posted you'll know I am a new resident, too. My situation involved looking for a place with my girlfriend who carried the same concerns that you did. I've found that, personally, there are few areas in Vegas I would feel comfortably living and working the night shift while she was at home alone (at least in the reasonable person's affordability range).
It cuts both ways because the nice areas are separated and therefore easily identified as worth robbing. But if you live near the crime hubs then you get the lazier or more opportune criminals. It's all a crap shoot but if you look at some of the crime related threads here you will see which zip codes may be deemed "safer". I must emphasize that with such a transient population the results you may see can change from month to month, year to year.
On that note, the rental property market is becoming more and more attractive to those moving to the area. As sellers realize that they are not going to get the price they want or need, renting becomes an attractive alternative and you can reap the benefits. Find an area you are comfortable with and then focus on schools for your daughter and you'll probably come out comfortably ahead. While I am happy in the 89102 zip code due to its proximity to everything I want, if I had a child I would never live here. Do the research and I am sure you will find what you are looking for.
Good luck to you (and if this advice is worthwhile, please help my speedy girlfriend with her driving issues in court).

Olecapt (wherever he went) would be sure to argue the transient nature. He says that there is absolutely nothing to support it...if one could possibly believe that!
