Each year my siblings and our families celebrate Christmas by locating a small family in need and providing Christmas gifts for them. This year, it is my turn to find the family in need. We try to find a single-parent family with 1-3 children. We want to make sure the family is truly in need and not merely scamming for a bigger holiday haul. We like to have some direct contact with the family and try to minimize the involvement of any agency or institution. In the past, we have relied on churches, local rescue missions, municipal agencies, and friends or colleagues to identify the family.

My wife and I are relatively new to LV, and I am having some trouble finding a family in the area. Ideally, we would like to find a family in Spring Valley, but we would look farther if necessary. Can you suggest where I might look or who I might ask to help me?

You might try contacting the principals from some of the more underprivileged schools in the valley. Elizondo and Tom Williams come to mind. Catholic Charities runs an "adopt a family" program that my co-workers and I participated in a few years ago.

Sometimes, though, it's just a matter of looking around a little more carefully, to see who is quietly desperate.

Thank you for your generosity.

Good tip on the schools NLVGal. That is the kind of thing that helps me. We used a school once to do this, but I did not know where to go here in LV. I will add those to the list. A "quietly desperate" kind of situation is where we like most to help.

VFW, Las Vegas Blvd North, and Craig Rd, adopting military families. You just go there and pick a star off the tree and that's your family. Saw it on TV last night. Who deserves it more? Adopt a Military Family for the Holidays | Charity | Nellis News

Are you only looking in Spring Valley because you live in the area?

Yes, Von I am not limiting us,to Spring Valley, but because I live here, I prefer to do this as close to home as I can.
