The Las Vegas shows are just as much a 'cultural" event as a Broadway show....i fail to see how Las Vegas cultural events differ greatly from any other city OF IT's SIZE....one persons culture is another persons DRECK.

A place is what you make of it. If you want culture, then be the culture.

Does Vegas have poetry reading venues? Also, Black box venues bring a certain life on the edge. You can find culture in the midst of kitsch. Refer to the postmodern classic, by Robert Venturi: Learning from Las Vegas - Revised Edition: The Forgotten Symbolism of Architectural Form You dont need to be artsy fartsy to have culture.

When I relocate to LV in January, I will actively seek the counter culture. I have an MFA in fine art and Aesthetics is a hobby of mine.

Here you go, my counterculture friend:

you really like the word dreck

vegas is not a high-brow city. there are lots of entertainment options in vegas but the demographics of the place don't support what liberal elites would call high culture.

one does not go to vegas to peruse the baroque exhibition at the MET or to take in a concert at Carnegie Hall.

One goes to vegas to pursue the more libertine cravings in life.

Dreck. It's kind of a cool word, isn't it? I hadn't heard it in some time before Dyni posted it.

We have something for everyone here. It's what makes the city unique. Looking to s.lut it up at a club? We gotcha. Looking for some nature and good photo ops? We gotcha. Looking for some country-western good times? We gotcha. Looking for some punk rock? We gotcha. Buffets, shows, culture, etc.

You get my point.

Thanks NLV gal. This is a good start.

Further, I imagine UNLV is going to be a source of culture:

Department of Theatre | University of Nevada, Las Vegas

Department of Art | University of Nevada, Las Vegas

Home | Department of Dance | University of Nevada, Las Vegas

Department of Philosophy | University of Nevada, Las Vegas
