Hi All,
I live in Reno...kind of a cultural wasteland, with cold winters to boot! I'm relocating at the end of ski season, and have given Dallas consideration, but now am wondering if I need to leave the state to find culture and better weather?

What kind of cultural offerings does Las Vegas have? I'm looking for ballet/opera/theatre/art showings, not casino shows. Does anyone have any thoughts?

We don't need no stinking culture.

The Nevada Ballet Company is a world-wide known ballet company and training academy with it's home at the Smith Center for Performing Arts. Our most recent performance was The Nutcracker last Christmas Eve which we enjoyed immensely.

First of all, just because a show is in a hotel doesn't mean it ain't culture. There are a lot of good shows in this town, and most all of the showrooms in hotels are so much better than the brand new, highly uncomfortable, Smith center for watching anything.

That said, I hate to admit it (even though I don't like ballet, opera, or classical music), but what most of you high brow types consider culture is not in abundance in Nevada. And that's for good reason. Nobody cares that much with all the other great entertainment around here. After all, Las Vegas is the Entertainment Capital of The World. The other stuff is here, but it's overshadowed by all the modern entertainment. I think we have six or seven Cirque shows here now, for instance.

If you want a mild climate, and love the southwest, move to either Albuquerque or Santa Fe, New Mexico. Santa Fe has an opera considered only second to NYC, and it is the third largest art market in the U.S., with dozens of galleries, and museums. Best food in the country also.

What is "highly uncomfortable" about the Smith Center? I am quite comfortable there.

The fact that we have six or seven Cirque du Soleil productions here is evidence of what's wrong with this town. Not what's right. We're starting to get some culture in this town -- and the shows are selling out. Granted, they're at places like the Smith Center and not at the MGM Arena. But at least we're getting somewhere.

We ignore the arts to our great detriment. It might not be your cup of tea. But it IS the cup of tea to the sort of people who can make big improvements for this city.

"Culture" is one of those eye of the beholder things.

Anyone who would consider moving to Dallas for its "culture" would be very happy in Las Vegas.

Hmmm...not sure what you're driving at. Have you been to Dallas lately? World-class art museums, symphony, ballet, art galleries, major league sports teams...Not sure Las Vegas has much of that. But I wanted to know for sure, and that's why I asked.

I visited Dallas for two weeks this summer, and found it to be a cosmopolitan, hip, sexy city. Your mileage may vary, of course...
