Hey everyone! I am 28 and want to move to Vegas for its unique blend of entertainment, semi-urban environment, and cheap rent. I do not drive and so I end up walking, busing, or cabbing everywhere. This unfortunately makes me very susceptible to gangs and crime as walking around (especially alone at night) can be dangerous in the wrong neighborhood.

Before you say "You fool! Walking alone at night is dangerous in any neighborhood!", I know. But keep in mind that I am a physically fit 28 year old male, I know how to fight, and I carry protection (and no I'm not talking about condoms.) So I can handle myself in most situations, but I still prefer to stay in neighborhoods where the chances of getting jumped/mugged/stabbed are less likely.

That being said, I also have no kids, so I like to go out and have fun. I go out to bars and clubs and like to drink and all that. Not driving, it's convenient to live within a few miles of an entertainment hotspot. Although my question "Where is a safe neighborhood?" has been asked several times before, it has mostly been answered for mild-mannered families with children who like to ride their bicycles outside. Thus, people recommend the 'burbs or gated communities in good school districts. I am not trying to avoid ALL crime and danger, I just want to avoid the really bad crime zones with gangs, muggings, and violent drug dealers/users.

Some of the areas I have been looking at are just east of the strip and a little north of UNLV (like around Twain and Swensen). Another area I have looked at is Downtown. Are these areas safe to walk in? Will I be shot by gang members? Will junkies stab me with their hypodermic needles? If so, where are some areas that you would recommend for someone like me who likes to drink and gamble, but who also doesn't cause trouble and isn't looking for any trouble?

Thanks!

It's not a good idea to move here if you don't drive.

Just curious. Why don't you drive?

1. Buses and cabs cost money. Do you have plenty of money saved up?

2. Twain and Swenson is NOT good: Here is what would be happening if you moved there: (I used to live in the Mark Twain Apartments in the 900 block of E. Twain, many years ago and it was not safe even then...

If you are from the east you probably have no concept of the distances here. Walking is not usually a good option, not only because the area you are looking at is one of, if not "the" most dangerous in town, but the heat will kill you before some drugged up mugger will. Taxis here cannot be "hailed" so you'd have to call for one and hope they show up. Bus service is not all that good either. So we usually tell people not to come here to live without a car.

Default thanks guys

thanks for the replies everyone!

@newopty: I moved to Seattle a few years ago from Tucson. I left my car there at my brothers house. No real need to drive here. I could go pick it up I suppose.

@WannaliveinGreenville: wow thank you for the links! I definitely won't be looking into that area anymore!!!

@von949: I work as an IC business writer. My work only requires a phone and internet connection, so I can live pretty much anywhere.

Anyway, thanks guys for all your input, looks like this might not be the best idea afterall! Thanks for saving me from making a mistake that I would probably regret later.

We have had a couple of people with such a life style on this list over the years.

The best deal is probably downtown. Option includes renting/buying in the mid rise loft buildings or a house in Parks or Huntridge. It is possible to walk to virtually everywhere in that area. Some crime but nothing scary. The area north of the university is actually a lot worse.

There are also some nice places in Silverado Ranch which is south of the strip. Only problem there is it is difficult without a car due to the distances involved.

There are also pockets of walkable places around Buffalo and Vegas and nearby...and up a bit in price in Green Valley Ranch.
