Hey everyone! I am 28 and want to move to Vegas for its unique blend of entertainment, semi-urban environment, and cheap rent. I do not drive and so I end up walking, busing, or cabbing everywhere. This unfortunately makes me very susceptible to gangs and crime as walking around (especially alone at night) can be dangerous in the wrong neighborhood.any neighborhood!", I know. But keep in mind that I am a physically fit 28 year old male, I know how to fight, and I carry protection (and no I'm not talking about condoms.) So I can handle myself in most situations, but I still prefer to stay in neighborhoods where the chances of getting jumped/mugged/stabbed are less likely.

If you are from the east you probably have no concept of the distances here. Walking is not usually a good option, not only because the area you are looking at is one of, if not "the" most dangerous in town, but the heat will kill you before some drugged up mugger will. Taxis here cannot be "hailed" so you'd have to call for one and hope they show up. Bus service is not all that good either. So we usually tell people not to come here to live without a car.

The best deal is probably downtown. Option includes renting/buying in the mid rise loft buildings or a house in Parks or Huntridge. It is possible to walk to virtually everywhere in that area. Some crime but nothing scary. The area north of the university is actually a lot worse.
There are also some nice places in Silverado Ranch which is south of the strip. Only problem there is it is difficult without a car due to the distances involved.
There are also pockets of walkable places around Buffalo and Vegas and nearby...and up a bit in price in Green Valley Ranch.
