Good afternoon. Need to get a clutch replaced in a Honda Civic. Looking for any local recommendations to keep me away from the dealer.

Much appreciated.

Absolutely NOT! Call the dealer for clutch specials or wally's. The wouldn't let Carl touch a bicycle!

A clutch might be the one thing I would bite the bullet on with the dealer, depending on how old the car is.

Yeah he took my check too - three times to replace parts that didn't need replacing. $1000 later the car still wasn't fixed.

Um, wrong, on almost all accounts. The only way you're right is in that he doesn't take credit cards. I think he takes PayPal, though, and if so, you can still use a card, and he does take checks - I know because I've used them.

We have been VERY pleased with his rates and his work. The first time we took a car to him, we were expecting to pay about $2k for the work he was doing (based on what the dealer would have wanted), and it only cost us about $800. We've been equally satisfied with subsequent work we've had done. He's worked on three of our cars, and we've never had a problem with the quality of service or his pricing.

I don't know what kind of problem you've had in the past with him, but based on his reviews both here and on Angie's List, and my own experiences, I can only conclude that it was either an isolated incident or you've got unrealistic expectations, or maybe both.
