One funny thing I've noticed at work lately is that many of the players from the LA area tell me that they just wanted to escape their city for the weekend. I always reply that it's funny b/c many of us here in LV go to LA to escape for the weekend. What are some places or ideas some of you have for escaping the LV for a weekend or even just a weekday? The other day I took a drive to Kingman, Az w/ a side adventure through some of the mountains. Great day. What are some of your all's escapes from the LV?

LA for stress relief? Hmmmmm

I go to Elko or to sleep to get away. My only New Years resolutions this year is to get more sleep. So far it's working great.

In Elko, my parents-in-law do not have Internet, cell phone reception is terrible and only Spanish speaking TV channels. I'm unplugged up there.

Nothing but fresh food, fishing, 4 wheeling and more food.

St George; Kingman; sometimes even Phoenix. Just depends on how much time we have off & what the goal is - at some point this spring we will be headed to Sierra Vista, AZ to visit some friends & attend our favorite Ren Festival while we're there.

Kingman has a FABULOUS camp ground at Mt Hualapai. It's 20 degrees cooler in the campground than Kingman itself & yet town is a 10 minute ride down the mountain, so if we need anything....

St George we haven't fully explored yet. It's the closest Cracker Barrel to us, so that's a must do. We've been thru the wildlife museum behind Cracker Barrel & it's a pretty good time.

Of course, there's always Jerome or Sedona.....

To name a few ...Springdale, UT/Zion NP to chill, or Cedar City for the plays, if I was still able to ski - Brian Head, UT. Sedona, AZ, is always a pleasant three day weekend. Pasadena, CA, is also a pleasant place to chill, shop, eat, go to museums. It's a good base location for all of the things to do in LA. All the various national parks within about 350 miles. Mammoth Lakes, CA, is a funky mountain town to hang out. We like the 4th of July Parades and Fireman's pancake breakfast there; plus, good, not too strenuous hikes, fishing, great skiing, beautiful scenery, Devil's Post-pile Nat'l Money-mint, etc. San Diego has everything except affordability. Also there's good fishing in various lakes within the 350 mile radius of Las Vegas. Even hunting, if you're so inclined. This could go on forever.

We used to go to Mesquite and stay at one of the hotels for a weekend. Once, up to Death Valley and stayed at the small casino/hotel nearby. Once, camping on the North Rim of the Grand Canyon which was awesome. Up to Mt. Charleston for the day or a weekend stay at the lodge.

Baker (NV), for the annual astronomy event, and Cheyenne, to see if we might want to move there. Those are the only places we've gone in the past several years for anything resembling a vacation or 'getaway.'

I went to mesquite the other weekend... but it's so small, I turned around and came back the same day.

I got taken for $100 by the VP and another $100 by the roulette wheel... that NEVER has happened to me.

Your stress level during your time in a city hinges heavily on work schedule and daily routine. If you go someplace with no set schedule, you can enjoy it much more immensely than the people that live there.

That's why people live under the delusion that when they move to Las Vegas, life will be like one big, endless party with poker tables, good food, great entertainment, sexy people and slot tournaments forever. When the dust settles and reality sets in, where you choose to live can take on a different dimension than it did when you were just visiting. And that pretty much goes for anywhere.

For what it's worth, LA can offer the Nevadan a great deal of relaxation...I recommend Ventura, personally. It's a funky beach town off of the beaten path on the edge of the Greater LA area, usually very affordable for a weekend and definitely a change of pace from the hustle of Vegas.

To get there, you'd take the 15 south to SR-58 west toward Bakersfield, then go south toward Los Angeles on SR-14. In Santa Clarita, turn and go north on I-5 toward Sacramento and then west on SR-126 to Ventura.

The quaint little town of Ojai is an easy 15 min. drive...

Santa Barbara is only 20 more minutes up the coast if you're so inclined...
