So is Lancaster/Palmdale (lots of aerospace work there) and Bakersfield (oil wells). In fact, even more so. Also try Santa Clarita, 30 min. outside of L.A.

Smart of you not to bring the family until you find work...

btw, Vegas traffic can be as bad, if not worse, than L.A.

Trust me on that

And, yes, Vegas is prone to earthquakes too! How do you think Mt. Charleston was formed??? But probably not as prone as L.A. so I'll let you have that one

Mountain Heights Montessori is a great school-- they take babies through Third grade if you are looking for a decent private school for all the kids.

But listen to what these good people are telling you here - they have no agenda. I'm planning a move to LV over the next few months, to expand my business. I currently live in SoCal. I've been coming to LV for fun and business for over 20 years. While I don't know the best neighborhoods and am busy trying to sort that out for myself, I'm not entirely unfamiliar with the city/culture/weather. What do you know about Las Vegas, really? How many times have you been there? Sunny skies? Yes, but can be cold in the winter and blistering in the summer - and I mean, blistering.

From what I've been able to gather, if you want to live in an area with good Elementary schools, you're looking at around $900 - $1,000 a month for a 3/2 apartment/condo. On $15/hr, that leaves you what for food, clothes, health care, insurance, electric, gas, phone, car - for 6 people? What kind of back up do you have there if you get in a jam? Family? Are they mostly in PA - 3,000 miles away? Chances of you getting a job with a casino without "juice"? Just about zero.

I don't mean to rain on your parade, but hate to see someone set themselves up for problems. $5,000 for a family of 6 to get started in LV isn't nearly enough. It wouldn't be enough for me and my dog.

btw, LV has EARTHQUAKES. Maybe not as often and not as attention grabbing as SoCal, but they have them.
Thank you for that info. I know a family of 6 is tough. I'm hoping that once I find my job my wife will be able to find a decent job at a casino. She had an MBA so I praying we can find something once we get settled. Only been to Vegas a few times really enjoyed it. But we have always been a loner family. My wife's family mostly lives in Jamaica and my family lives in western Pa and we couldn't even find a babysitter to go to a movie. My family never really interacted with us. Yes I come from a weird family. All we have is us so we are determined.

Thanks for that info. I looked into Palmdale/Lancaster area. I really wanted to be in California I just wasn't sure of where I would live while looking for employment. I thought about living out if my SUV if need be but my closest relative lives in inglewood and corona. Wherever I can find a job that is where i will gravitate too.

North Las Vegas is generally less expensive. Eva Simmons elementary is in my neighborhood and has a good reputation. I'm sure one of our real estate people will be along with some advice. Good luck.
Thank you for that link. I think we may really look into nlv seems like it maybe a little more affordable.

Thank you. I think I may have to wait awhile to check out private schools. Hopefully with a decent job I can.

Not sure where I will stay but I need to go out there and find a job and apartment ASAP so that I can send for my wife and 4 kids. Please let me know where I can find a decent elementary I have an 8, 6, 3 and 1 year old. I would also like to know of any career fairs doing on in the area. I have a BA in social science and MS in criminal justice so I'm hoping to find a job in my field but if not any job will do until I can get on my feet. Please give me info on cheaper places to live. North Las Vegas, Henderson, Las Vegas it doesn't matter. If maybe you know any jobs hiring that would be a great help as well.

Thank you all. I really appreciate it. Arrival date 2/25/13.
I would not come out here unless you have a job already lined up as the job market sucks here at best. This is a bad plan, but if you do this I recommend Henderson NOT north Las Vegas as that is for the most part the worse part of town.

I have to come out and look for work. Coming from western PA I can't afford to take flights for interviews. I have to be out there apply to some jobs even if its McDonald's until I can find something better. Henderson seems like a nice city away from the hussle and bussle of the strip. I will definitely be checking it out once I get there.

People who say that have never been to the Aliante area.
