I'm sure you meant "swamp" cooler.

It's hard to tell you because it will vary so much by size of the place you are cooling, and how cold you like it. But the swamp cooler in conjunction with an air conditioner will probably save you some money on the A/C bills. There have been many discussions on that here, and people have given a wide range of how much their electric bills are.

Personally I don't like the odor that a swamp cooler adds to the air, an unless you are careful you could get some mold. I know I'll get an argument on that, but I've had swamp coolers before. Besides one reason I live here is because I don't like humidity.

One of the best ways I've found to cut down on electricity usage is to install digital thermostats. And in one house we had more insulation sprayed into the attic and it was like a blanket in winter, and a beer cooler in summer.

Buzz, your post made me smile because I was chatting with someone the other day who asked about whole-house humidifiers and such and why they were not utilized more here in Vegas. I responded that most Las Vegans are terrified of mold. I told him that we get mold, but it isn't the sissy mold they get in other places. We get the nasty black mold. Then I added " Anything that survives in the desert has to be a bad-ass, and that includes the mold"

There was so much mold in the office where I worked on 8th and Carson that I understand they spent half a million dollars to remediate it just so they could safely tear it down. We were all sick all the time. After leaving there we weren't sick anymore. High incidence of cancer too.
