Actually that is 100% true. I know I will be taking a cut to work for NHP, but there is something about loving what you do to make that cut justifiable. I am passonate about commercial carrier compliance for personal reasons, and would gladly work for NHP for what they pay. Besides, my fiance makes enough for both of us.

Wink Misunderstanding on Vegas

What should rightly go into tax coffers is skimmed by the casino-corporations more efficiently than Lefty Rosenthal and the Outfit could ever have imagined in their wildest dreams....this means no parks, schools, rec centers, pools, libraries, public buildings, services, for the locals.makes for a crappy environment, and you therefore get a revolving door of residents, and no continuity that bodes pride of place. Where there is no pride of place, there is no joining of organizations, and an egregious amount of crime. And no one cares.....why should they?
2.) The revolving door of transiency...so many people coming and going, and not just tourists. They don't tell you that while 5,000 a month come, just about the same amount leave. If they all stayed, the metro area would be more on the cusp of 3 million now. Over the last 30 years, a good million folks bailed back to whence they came, and never looked back. Revolving door cities have no continuity on any level, breed crime, and keep the main godfather in the area, casinos, running the show. They want transiency, which stifles debate, and eliminates the possibility of any grass-roots bubbling up of tax referenda that would make Las Vegas a more livable city.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
SO, that's your answer in a nutshell as to why Vegas has problems as a livable city,
and why so many that come go right back out in the same revolving door. Hey, look
on the bright side, at least revolving doors can't hit you on the way out!
LOL!~
I've been here all my life(38 yrs) and in the past 10 years from the influx of people moving here by the thousands, we have more parks and rec centers than you can shake a stick at. Look outside the strip and you'll see a lot more going on than you think. I've never worked in a casino and I don't gamble. Look outside the box. There's a lot more going on than you know.

Make your own damn fun. Get a hobby. I rarely gamble because I understand that it's a means to fund our state without having income taxes. This was a great place to live and still is, but it was better before all these nancy's came here and started crying. Govt. used to leave us alone, now there's taxes and rules and fees for everything.

First many of them left CA and NY et al because of the high tax burden that those states carry. Then they come here and the first they do is start crying for all the services that caused them to have to pay high taxes in the old state. Make up your mind.

Second, no one is praying on anyone's weaknesses. This is the progressive state. I love that I don't have nanny govt telling me I can't buy a beer on Sunday, or any day or only at this store, but only during certain hours, but only if I have my little state issued liquor card. Oh and it's nearly near beer. Joy. If you can't handle your money, your liquor your time, then this place isn't for you. And you should move.

And how come the people I see crying about the lack of culture around here don't really seem like high culture kind of people. A black turtleneck and petchoulli oil smell does not an artist make. I think they're just complaining to be complaining. Because if they were really about the culture they'd be doing instead of complaining. And if they had real talent they'd leave for greener pastures. There's a reason there's not much great art and high culture outside a few select cities worldwide. Because a lot of us don't care for it. Uneducated? Perhaps. Uninterested? More likely. I'd rather go fishing. I can't eat an oil painting, the hermetically sealing is a mother to gnaw through.

Hell I would never even go to the Strip if I didn't work there. And I can count on one hand the number of times I went into a casino as a minor. Parents have seriously slacked off in the last 30 years.

Good Posts by both of you. Some people wallow in misery. If they looked at someone who acted and sounded like they did, they'd probably complain about them too!!

High Desert Nevadan...fantastic post! I like your style and your attitude. The Vegas you speak of has been overrun by outsiders.

I especially liked the part where he questions the crybabies who moved there because their taxes were too high where they came from, and then complain because they don't have the same services in LV. Like he said...they can't have it both ways!

Agreed.....Nevada has ALWAYS been a State where you PAY for what you USE.

If you don't use a motor vehicle, you don't have to pay for it. [unlike the states whith high taxes and low motor vehicle fees.]

Cheap booze and cheap cigarettes, of course make Nevada a progressive state.

I'll have somewhat disagree with those who wrote about taxes and services. When I lived in Clark County I, for one, felt we got a lot more for our tax dollars than I currently have here in Hernando County, Florida. The property taxes on a slightly smaller home than I owned in Henderson are approximately $1,000 more per year. Meanwhile the parks and rec system (if it can be called that) down here is far inferior to what was available to us in Clark County and/or Henderson.
