Does anyone know if other cities offer this service for free(ad supported only)? I can see a lot of people taking advantage of this ONLY if it is free or really cheap.

Chris Ainsworth: Free wi-fi for downtown | Las Vegas CityLife

Quote:
This summer, downtown Las Vegas will join Denver, El Paso, Houston and dozens of other municipalities that have installed free wi-fi service in their city centers in an attempt to foster their burgeoning tech scenes.

Good thing: If the ad rates and access are reasonable, this may actually prove to be a boon to downtown area businesses, allowing for both greater exposure and discovery.

Bad thing: Being corporate rather than municipally driven, the wi-fi service will have to make money. If it isn’t profitable, don’t expect it to be around for long.

I was wondering what ever happened to that idea. A few years ago lots of cities were considering it, then it just seemed to go away.

Maybe it coincided with everyone and their uncle having smart phones with data plans and being able to create their own hotspot.

It's because it costs money, and cities across the country are broke.

Managing a network like that, and keeping hackers from using it as an anonymous entry point is difficult and expensive. You want honest users to have a good, seamless Internet experience, but you don't want to allow any nefarious activity to take place. That makes it a difficult project to pull off - especially for free.
