One more thing to add, if you have all the documents ready, the Decatur DMV is nice. If you go early (I think they open 8AM) the turn around is fast. I was in and out within 1.5 hours, that includes the vin inspection, struggling with my stupid plates, filling out forms, and the photo shoot for your DL. In NY you have to make sure to allot half a day or a full day to get all that I did here in 1.5 hours.

I did the following:
get insurance for my car - insurance companh must be NV certified if you are bringing in your car from out of state
get smog test
get vin inspection (new from July 2012), this you can do at the Decatur DMV, small structure before the main building. Just follow the signs.
apply for car registration at dmv
change title at DMV (optional but I prefer to get it in case I decide to sell)
transfer out of state DL to NV DL. Requires eye test.

You'll find all required documents to bring with you in that site, proof of ID etc. If registering out of state car, bring tools to remove your plates if a plain flat head screw (which is what they provide) will not work for your car. I needed a hex screw driver. They will require you to surrender old plates. In return they will give you a document certifying old plates were surrendered. In case you need to present proof of it. I needed that because NY requires you to surrender as soon as you cancel your insurance or I get a fine for driving without an insurance.
Thanks for the rundown. Just wondered what did all this stuff set you back, total? Do you recall?

I also did not have my birth certificate but they accepted my baptism record Weird!!!! Don't forget to bring some tools to take off your old plates and hand them in and then be able to put on your new ones. NEXT

Thanks so much jangler, I have a 2000 mitsubishi, so may be similar numbers. All of that is actually less than I was expecting!

I got my drivers license in February. I went to the DMV on Flamingo. I discovered that the wait was only an hour when I went in around noon.
