Hi,

At my current job I face possible relocation to Las Vegas as we are currently in Arizona. We like the Summerlin area and have three girls ages 7, 3, and 8 months old. We are concerned as we are trying to find a good preschool/elementary/middle school for our kids.

I know middle school is a few year out, but some suggestions never hurt.

Looking forward to your comments and advice

Thank you

Although Summerlin is one of the nicer parts of Vegas the best schools in town are located in Green Valley. They have some of the higher rated schools academically in contrast to the rest of the city. Thats not to say Summerlin doesnt have decent schools, but for Vegas its not saying much being that education in this state plain old stinks!

Actually Rogich is the best rated middle school most years. And Rogich and its feeder schools rate overall about the same as the GVR schools. Note that it is not GV that rates high. It is GVR and the other high end areas south of 215.

I think "stinks on ice" is more grammatically acceptable than "plain old stinks."

But I'm glad to know that I'm not the only one who asks "compared to what?" when told that there are excellent Las Vegas schools (of any sort).

Rather than compare our schools to each other, let's compare them to schools in Silicon Valley and New England. When we can go toe-to-toe with THOSE schools, I'll start using the words "excellent" and "Las Vegas schools" in the same sentence.

That is an absurd standard.

The rational one is what you could expect to get in the upper middle class suburbs of other cities around the country.

On that standard schools like Rogich are quite good.

Why?

Why can't we have great schools when other areas of the country can? You see the world as it is and ask "why?" I see the world as it could be and ask "why not?"

The only reason we don't have world-class schools in Las Vegas is because we as a city do not want them. We'd collectively rather have another six-pack in the fridge or a bigger TV every couple years than pay the minor amount of money to pull our schools out of the swamp.

Having a great school in town immediately improves all the other schools in the area. Don't think for a minute that the students at Deerfield or Choate are the only ones who benefit. All the towns in driving distance benefit from raising the bar as high as possible.

Would you, or anyone here, care to take the position that Las Vegas has set the highest possible standard for education? Didn't think so. Check and mate.

As I have pointed out before the mission of a large school system is to educate the middle 60 or 70%.

It is not to provide a Bronx High School of Science or a Stuyvesant.

The book on creating a high school for the exceptional is mixed. The students that attend will likely receive a better education but at the cost of lowering the opportunity for children to receive a high level education in the individual high schools. And you actually lower the colleges available to the bright students. It is well known that the ranking colleges set quotas for the elite high schools.

And the peeling of the top few percent has impacts even on the relatively good high schools. It limits their ability to offer the premium academic courses.

So no free lunch.

If you wished to fix the Las Vegas Schools you would start at the middle and go down. It is the bottom half that is terrible.
