In Vegas and the surrounding valley you generally will not see kids out playing by their homes like in other cities or states. Families tend to gather at parks, it's bizarre most don't even play in their back yards unless there is a pool. We moved here from Montana and that was the first thing we noticed driving around. After living here now for a while I don't notice it until a client points it out.

Getting to meet your neighbors most anywhere in the valley is difficult. They drive home go in the garage and that's it. So you will meet most of your neighbors in the parks. People with children tend to meet their neighbors easier because the kids meet other kids in school or churches or other activities and they will bring their friends to the house. It doesn't mean their not friendly it's just the way it seems to work here.

You'll find the guys shooting dice in a nearby alley and the young ladies are out taking pole dancing lessons. You know it is Vegas....

No, it means they're probably paranoid. I've said it before and I'll say it now -- Las Vegans are the most aloof people I've ever met.

I think it's a function of how houses are built here. Unlike homes in the northeast, Las Vegas houses tend to have their entire focus on the back patio. That's where the pool is, where most of the life of the house is and also where most of the windows are directed. And most back yards are surrounded by a concrete wall that's at least head-high. All of this means you don't see your neighbors as much.

There's also the fact that some houses here are second homes for Californians who want to get away from LA or San Diego for the weekend.
