Hi all,
I am new to the area and in my dog developed a tear in his ligament and needs surgery. I received a quote for over $3000 and that seems a bit high. Years ago my dog had a tear and needed surgery and paid a little over $1200.

Can anyone recommend a trusted vet in the area that would perform this surgery at a reasonable price?[/font]
Is this normal to have vet cost so much higher?

Thanks for your input

Everything has gone up so $3000 wouldn't surprise me. I know you don't want to go to a franchise clinic because that's like taking your car to a dealer for repairs. They'll sell you what you don't need and overcharge you for in the process.

We only trust South Shores Animal Hospital in the NW part of town (Desert Shores Community). Our primary doctors are Dr. Suzuki or Dr. Claus. They are very smart and very caring, and you never get ripped off for anything your pet doesn't need. Don't know a lot about the other two docs there, but saw Dr. Noda once and we liked her too.

If we lived on the other side of town we would only trust Dr. Paula Paetz at Pecos Russell Animal Hospital. She may be the best vet in town. Very caring.

Dr. Holtz practice (if he still practices in Vegas) would be the man I'd recommend to take your pets to. I've known him since I was a child. He's a good man and vet.

Good luck and wish you the best for your Shepherd!

If its a cruciate ligament, 2 of my dogs had them within a year... Cost was around 2500. each... Went to Camino Al Norte Animal Hospital... the only place I trust.

You should only be paying $2500-$3000+ at the Veterinary Referral Center where it would be done by a board certified surgery specialist. They are the only place in town with board certified veterinary surgeons. This is where you go if you want the latest and most advanced techniques used or your dog has something specific about its case that makes it unique or more difficult for a regular vet clinic to perform the repair. Board certified surgeons do an internship (usually two of them, one year each) and a surgical residency of 3 years if I recall correctly. Plus they do this type of work all day long, so you can see where they are more skilled.

A regular veterinary clinic should run $1200-$1500 to do that type of repair done by a non-board certified surgeon. Not all clinics do them, make sure and ask how many they've done of this type of procedure in the last 3-6 months. If the answer is 1 or 2, move on. Orthopedic surgeries like this are something a lot of vets don't work with, you need training and the correct tools to do the job right. You want someone who is skilled in orthopedic repairs, not just some guy's "favorite vet". You may not get most advanced surgical repair technique at a regular vet clinic, but it should be repaired adequately.

About a year ago we had a luxating patella repaired in our tiny dog (chihuahua mix). Aloha Animal Hospital is where our dogs go (very happy with their practice). We were given two options. The first was to wait for a specialist who visits monthly to do the operation. The second was for Dr. Jamie to do the surgery herself. She said she's done many of them (luxating patella repair), but recommended the specialist unless we couldn't wait, as he's probably done hundreds, and is doing them every week. IIRC, this group of vet surgeons comes in from out of town, and visits several clinics, but I could be mistaken. I don't believe there was much difference in cost between the specialist, or Dr Jamie. Dog's leg has been fine ever since the surgery.

Thank you all for the detailed information. I will check out the places mentioned. I am sure the little guy will bounce back to "normal" once the surgery is done.

Thanks again!

I hated driving to that area but there is a vet on East FLamingo that was very good and affordable. I had my dobermans ears cropped there and it was awesome. I was referred by a co-worker with Dobes, and I Great Dane owners go there as well... Sorry forgot the name, but I think it is called Flamingo vet or something
