My daughter is one of those kids that tutor after school. She really enjoys helping other students and
I think it helps with her leadership skills.

Most definitely.

My daughter will aslo try it next year. This year she just has too much going on. Choir, Soccer, GATE, violin practice. She will have to drop something in order to tutor. Probably Choir.

My spouse and I are applying to teach in CCSD next year. I'm a special education teacher and I would like to work in an alternative/dropout prevention or even a correctional setting. Are these opportunities available in Vegas? And for those of you who are/are married to teachers, how has the district changed since 2004? My wife taught in Vegas during 04-05 and compared to her tenure in Chicago it was like heaven to her. That's why we are re-applying there now. We went back to IL and the education system in Chicago is beyond broken.

My twins have been attending CCSD since the beginning. They have been receiving an excellent education so far as we get ready to wrap up 3rd grade. One is in GATE and the other just missed out getting in but both get good grades and are very active in extra-curricular activities.

CCSD does get a bad rap, there are some bad schools but there are some very good schools. My kids are learning algebraic concepts now that I was learning in middle school in the better school systems in Maryland. The schools that are doing well like my kids' have teachers that really do care and
this is the most important factor have parents ACTIVELY involved. Both my wife and I help out with homework, my wife goes in every week to help our son's teacher with copying or other projects while I donate money to buy school supplies or volunteer at various events.

The biggest issue with CCSD is it is top-heavy in administration. As it stands right now, we are extremely pleased with our kids education but we are unsure what will happen when they get to middle school and we deal with a new school administration.

If you don't mind me asking, which school are your twins attending? Is it hard to get into the GATE program?

I know about the school but I want to get more information about The Meadows School. Thoughts?

^^ Expensive. Mayor Goodman was a manager / executive there at one point. For what you pay for The Meadows (which is the Spanish translation of Las Vegas, by the way) you could send a child to a nice university. I'm sure it's a quality education, but very pricey. The local magnet schools are a bargain. Private school quality education on your tax-payer dime.

Kitty Ward. It's not hard but it is tougher on kids with more creative processes like my daughter compared to the analytical types like my son!
