In 3 years here, I have yet to take my car in for a routine oil change (with coupon usually) and not have them come back at me saying I need $1,000+ amount of work done.

Last week was no different...used a groupon and it turns out I need to change out my water pump, estimate $1,200. I used to know a couple mechanics back in NY that would do maintenance on the cheap out of their garage...can anyone recommend someone local?

What kind of car has a $1200 water pump? Have you called the dealer to check how much this part is? Try an aftermarket store on the internet and have it shipped?? From there you can see if a shop will just do the labor if you provide the part. Ask how many hours it takes to replace a water pump for the make and model you have.

Your quote is way, way high. It's even high for doing the timing belt & water pump which are generally done at the same time. Look at 4-6 hours for labor @ $75-90 per hour plus parts. It'll be a higher if you need cam/crank seals, gaskets, etc.

I only recommend four guys. If you own a Honda, don't go anywhere but Wally's Honda. If you own a Toyota, don't go anywhere but Wally's son's place across the street from Wally's.

All others go to Carls Cool Cars: Home Page

I also recommend Phil Dase, but not sure where he's working now.

My husband has taught automotive for years and one of the other instructor's family has a repair shop somewhere. At any rate, their name and the family and the business is Stivers. I know they are honest and do good work.

it's a 2003 corvette, they did recommend doing the gasket and a couple other things that they said needed to be done alongside the water pump...

That's such an easy car to work on with the clamshell hood.

Go to Major Auto Repair on W.Russel I believe. Ask for Peter. They are the best, and they won't scam you. Speaking from personal experience. I won't go anywhere else.
