Should I buy a Gun (for my home?)

Dunno Mac, has your home had firearms training?

The answer to that, on an individual basis is, don't be stupid.

Yes, stupid people have guns, and do stupid things with them. Stupid people do stupid things with many other dangerous instrument besides guns. That's not the issue here.

The question here is whether MacGeek is stupid, and would do stupid things with a gun. I'm venturing, without really knowing him, just by the nature of his posts, that the answer is no.

Google a video, "stupid people with guns." Then try to envision a laugh track while you watch it.

And the problem is that we cannot legislate intelligence and thoughtfulness. We cannot legislate away stupidity and ignorance.

The chance that MacGeek will need a gun and not have one is lower than the chance that he will have one and wish he didn't. (And both are VASTLY outnumbered by the chance he won't have a gun and not care.)

One of my favorites, from Roger Ebert:

“Why do you need to carry a gun?”

“I live in a dangerous neighborhood.”

“It would be safer if you moved.”

He already decided he cares. That's why we're discussing this.

And if your smart about dealing with the gun (mainly keeping it well secured), the chances of biting you go way down, and it's still available if you need it. Again, it goes back to stupid people doing stupid things.

That's covered by #2, but it doesn't hurt to specifically point it out.
