Has anyone been to this event? Is it any good? We recently went to the Hawaiian Festival at the Rio and we found it expensive and boring. We love the Hawaiian culture, food, and crafts so we were wondering if this one was more of the same or something we shouldn't miss. Thanks for any info!

I have never been to the event. However, the California Casino Hotel is geared toward serving gamblers and other visitors from Hawaii.

Note their restaurant:

Aloha Specialties

Thank you for your response. We might have to check it out since it's free. The last festival we paid $8 per person so I guess we aren't really losing much. Thanks again!

One more thing. The hotel actually sponsors a lot of charters from Hawaii. If I had to go to a casino based Hawaiian festival, that hotel would be the place to go.

If you like Hawaiian food, you could also try L&L Hawaiian BBQ.

I haven't been leied in a long time. I bet I haven't been to that hotel more than three times in 49 years. And probably no one cares, do they?

I go to Aloha Specialties all the time for siamen and wonton. the place is clean and safe and indeed is geared toward PACIFIC ISLANDERS.

it would be nice if OP posted when lei day is???

I am sure it's going to be a smallish event.

May 4th and 5th at the California Hotel. How is the saimin at Aloha Specialties? If you go there often it must be good. In Hawaii as you know saimin is actually a meal not something only broke college kids eat. S&S used to be served in McDonalds. Noodles, daikon, kamaboko, egg, sometimes spam.

Of course the perfect breakfast on the go was musubi.

Hmmm, making myself hungry I think I'll have to check that place out.

Oh and to the other poster who mentioned L&L you should check out Ohana Hawaiian BBQ. Same exact plate lunch.

yeah yeah, the Saimen is pretty good. Not gourmet, but good as home style... I base my judgement on the soup base/stock.

it's like comfort food for me.

Thanks for all the recommendations too! We've only been to Island Flavor since moving here (out in SW on Durango) and we thought it was really good.

We've been to L&L while in Oahu. Didn't realize there was a location here too. Thanks!

It is not generally a recommendation that I make to people as many are surprised when they see what a lot of Hawaiian food is really like.
