Tonight's my first official night of taxi driving in Vegas (checker cab). I'm on the Extra Board and my show time is 12:30am. I am NERVOUS AS HELL. Anybody have any tips for me?

What if a passenger asks me to drive to a location and I don't know where it is? Where can I get one of those hefty Las Vegas Directional Guide maps? The receptionist at YCS said they don't carry them anymore!

What if I can't make exact change for a passenger? Are we cabbies supposed to carry coins?

What if I accidentally pick-up in the drop-off line or vise-versa?

Oh dear, so many unanswered critical questions. I guess there's a first time for everything, I'll just have to learn as I go. I still don't fully understand the dispatch-system, and a lot of other stuff.

Wish me luck guys. Any tips/advice would be GREATLY appreciated.

Would it be better to direct these questions at a fellow cab driver? Isn't there some sort of buddy system that cab companies run to acclimate and orient new drivers?

Good luck. I here it's a hard profession but can be rewarding.

What if a passenger asks me to drive to a location and I don't know where it is? GPS! Smartphones are your friend. Where can I get one of those hefty Las Vegas Directional Guide maps? They're worthless! And the receptionist told you where to get one already...even if not, books are usually found in bookstores...truckstops usually have map books...two good hints. The receptionist at YCS said they don't carry them anymore!

What if I can't make exact change for a passenger? Bigger tip! Are we cabbies supposed to carry coins? These are questions you should have been asking while getting hired. Short answer is no. Read the side of your car, it says; Driver carries $5.00 max....okay it's BS but it still puts the change thing on the passenger. I start out each night with ten ones and two fives.

What if I accidentally pick-up in the drop-off line or vise-versa? Not very likely...more likely that you'll pull into a valet line...then the Valet's will go apesh!t....maybe.

Oh sure...now you want help but didn't let me refer you...hence no $200 referral bonus! $200 could have bought a lot of help!

You DO have a smartphone right?

As for knowing where stuff is....I will guarantee, no matter how long you've lived in LV, you will NOT know where you are going!

You gotta learn the CAB ways to go....you probably should have driven around in your car and followed cabs around to learn where they go.

Not unless you're Ethiopian....you're on your own! Don't bother dispatch either...they won't have it.

Learn your way around Dean Martin, Frank Sinatra, Industrial, Koval and Audrie.. Spend part of the night exploring with the cab...EMPTY!

Pull in and out of a few casinos to see how to get in and out of them as a cab before picking up a passenger.

Drive through T-1 and T-3 terminals before having a passenger. Also go from T-1 to t-3...it's not very intuitive.

Maybe he's home weeping right now. Cabbies have a tough job. I'd be in the nuthouse after a week on the job.

I have found most every job has a learning curve. I look at any job like this. If the company hires someone everyone had to start at the same place and if others made it so can I/you.

I'll admit that it is entertaining.....so was bouncing. Bouncing in Denver had better benefits...in LV bouncing was boring.

I just wish LV cabs could be leased though...I'd make much more money and could adjust my hours better.
Plus I'd have a cleaner cab.
