Unions brought us all every benefit we enjoy today. When they shrink so does everyones benefits, union or not. That's what has been happening. As for strip projects shutting down, temporarily yes but every IBEW journeyman and apprentice in that local is working if they want to along with thousands of travelers and standing calls for apprentices. Hell, they were working apprentices from other locals during their summer break from school. So their are many still making $$ in Vegas. Not like before but better than Florida ever has been. Here 95% of IBEW make $19.69 or $22.37 with 5% making $24.16 and way worse benefits and horrible working conditions. Seriously worse than the non-union electricians I've woked next to. My commute is 50 miles one way and it takes 2 1/2 hours of driving a day. I make $13.29 hr., only get 37 hours a week because our school is one day a week at 1 P.M. and I spend $70 a week on gas. I could go on and on but Vegas is a friggin dream compared to this place. The president, business manager and apprenticeship director are all on the side of the contractors. There are very rarely any stewards on any jobs, and they let the contractor do what they want regardless of the agreement. Most contractors don't even provide WATER which is in the agreement they agreed to. 2 people in my class lost parts of their fingers and a guy that worked for my company was electrocuted. A guy in my mine safety class OD'd and a guy who worked for my contractor murdered his whole family and the dog right after I got on with them. Ed Covington was his name. Another guy working for my wifes company was burnt really bad and had to have a finger amputated. This has happened this year and that's just what I know. Safety takes a back seat ALWAYS. So Vegas is a dream for us. Truly a dream you see.

I am also an apprentence carpenter looking to out to Vegas for work and dont know how to get started. I am alittle scared. I am with local 2361 in Orange, CA. I was laid off for two weeks now. I have been hittig every jobsite and contacting other union brothers and no result. They either put me on a roster or tell to call back next week. If you get any ideas let me know and I will do the same. Rob

You all have to recall that about a month or two ago, Echelon laid off 800 workers for all trades including ironworkers, electricians, carpenters, etc. Just moving - carpenter apprentice - behind 800 people just laid off? Some of you only referred to the residential areas....tunnel vision folks...Also take into consideration the hotel towers canceled, the mall in Summerlin canceled due to the economy - UNION JOBS - The market seems rather bleak right now.

I agree with the comment relating to coming out here, networking, get to know people, submit your name, see what you can accomplish. Overall, don't expect miracles because union carpentry is not being used much right now. Sad but true. People want to argue? Post the jobs expanding hotels, schools, hospitals on this forum to give the PO something to work off of.

Your facts are a little off in that maids in unions only make $11 an hour - that's at the Bellagio - 4-star hotel/casino - the elite - the highest paying. Therefore, to answer your question, AIN'T HAPPENIN' UNLESS THERE'S TWO INCOMES!

the pay in vegas is substantially higher than other places, costco starts at $13 an hour now with benefits.. and questioning maid pay, if they are in the same union, wouldn't they be paid similar amounts based on seniority, not property? so TM, cite your source where maids only make $11 an hour.... i'm sure you took that off the top of your head as usual.

Well, seeing how minimum wage is...what? $6.85 here, $11.00 isn't too shabby.

Was not cancelled. Just delayed. As was Echelon and much other stuff.

Culinary is well above 12 for a room attendant. The includes full medical and a 40 hour guarantee. Roughly twice most places in the US.

TM is not very good at accuracy.

I guess TM is closer then anyone cares to admit. Here are the words right from George Maloofs, owner of The Palms mouth:

• Cocktail servers at the hotel-casino will earn $9.25 an hour at the close of their first year on the job. That compares with $9.24 an hour at Caesars Palace, Luxor and Mandalay Bay, and $9.30 at Bellagio.
• Food servers will earn $9.25 at the Palms on their one-year anniversary, and $9.24 at Mandalay Bay, Caesars Palace and Luxor.
• Cooks will earn $14 an hour, compared with $13.87 at Mandalay Bay and Luxor; $13.95 at Bellagio, and $14.18 at Caesars Palace.
• Housekeepers will earn $11.05 hourly, which mirrors the second-year wage at Bellagio, Mandalay Bay, Caesars Palace and Luxor.

I suspect many of these jobs enjoy some tips too to be fair though.

Companies who are earning hundreds of millions of dollars and paying these scab wages should be ashamed of themselves. But they are not. People have to work to survive and will take anything and the casinos are right there to take advantage of the working slobs among us.

Regardless of what the casinos are paying, the fact of the matter is that small business, non unionized businesses pays much less then those casinos. Without benefits !! The benefits the casinos offer are valuble !!

So you get to work in a smoke filled cancer infested building, develop
emphysema or some other smoke inhalation related illness, need medical care in a Nevada health care system where one or the other will kill you.

Insurance is diffidently a plus. As a small business owner it is hard for the insurance. We do not have insurance right now, and for me to get insurance just for myself, it is over $500.00 if I want maternity included into it. That is just for myself, does not include my hubby and daughter. Sucks!!!
