Hello all,

I'm currently contracting overseas and I plan on returning stateside soon. I'm interested in moving to Las Vegas just like so many others on here. However my situation is a bit different. I did 8 years active Army and got right in to contracting after separating in 2012. With that being said, I have more than enough money saved up and I have several benefits I intend on using. I have no debt, no kids...had a wife but she left me which is why I'm in the situation I'm in now...without a home. I can pretty much go where ever I want to start my new life, and Vegas seems like a spot I could potentially settle down at. I made a couple of trips out to Vegas a few years ago when I was applying for Metro PD and viewed several different places to live. After getting married, plans for Vegas went out the window. I'm pretty sure in time things may have changed with some of the places I last visited. I was interested in Henderson, but now I'm not so sure. I would like to live near downtown or close to the blvd.

My question is:

What apartment complexes/lofts do you natives/veterans of the area recommend? I'm looking for a studio or 1BR apartment that allows dogs (I have a Shiba Inu), and is clean and safe. I know there is no such thing as completely safe, but looking for something where I don't have to worry about druggies, car vandalism/theft, etc...I'm 26, so I would like to be around others in my age category. Also, something that is close to restaurants, bars, and all that other stuff! I am willing to spend anything up $1,000 for rent.

Thank you guys in advance for the tips/advice!

And if anyone knows of any good executive security & armed security gigs, please feel free to share!

Yet another slacker who apparently considers the NUMEROUS previous discussions on this topic to be irrelevant.

pay no attention to the one liners.

welcome to city data las vegas.

i have no idea about apartment complexes. i retired from the navy (overseas) and moved out here with my wife. we brought our cat and dog (a shiba inu) - great dog! a few months before processing out, i took leave and came house hunting. stayed at nellis and found a realtor and she met me and drove me around and showed me some houses. do they have realtors for apartments? anyway, after driving around all day with her, i narrowed it down and drove to the houses myself and started an ever increasing circle outward with the windows down so as to see and hear my potential neighbors, see any graffiti, cars on blocks in the yard, you get the idea. i did this on a weekday and weekend. i went to nearby establishments (a gun store, the police department) and spoke to an officer on duty one saturday and lo and behold he had looked into the very subdivision i was thinking of and gave me great info. btw, i ended up in far southeast henderson and do not feel far from anywhere in the valley. i highly recommend hendrson aamof.

armed security job? there is wsi (wackenhut) up at the nevada national security site, formerly known as the nevada test site. lots of former army guys work there - rank and file (supervisors; captains and LTs are non-bargaining and guards are union - if that matters at all to you).

there is turtle creek apartments on boulder highway. i drive past there several times a week and it seems like cocktail waitresses or dancers live there because i see them at the bus stop out front. hows that for housing criteria?

I recommend the townhouse apartments managed by Oakwood. For less than a grand trash and water included you get a 1000 sq ft 2 bedroom 2 car garage townhouse and all but one or two of their communities are in decent areas. That may be more than what you need, but if you look around you'll find that at a regular apartment complex you may be looking at the same price or more for a 1 bedroom with no garage. To me this is the best way to go outside of homeownership.

The prices are usually cheaper than stated on their brochures. For example I lived in one for 4 years and the brochure always listed the rent at $1025 when in fact I paid $895.

Also, this is a Vet rich environment. Everybody and their mama went to Afghanistan or Iraq multiple times and the people who didn't, wannabe "Call of Duty warriors" seem to have little respect for the real McCoys due to their sense of self entitlement and grandiose self images. In a nutshell what I'm saying is the job market here for people with a "tactical" background is saturated. The Test Site can take years "to fall through" and in the mean time you've got former contractors happy/lucky to make $14 hour at shooting ranges making sure tourists don't accidentally shoot themselves with an MP5. You could go to a casino and say, "hi I'm a scout sniper recon ranger SEAL" and they'll say, "here's $12 hour go stand by that potted plant".

i've not run across what you describe and i've been here going on a decade. if prior service is an employment criteria, a DD214 is required, and disability status may need to be proved - again through documentaion, so paperwork weeds out any of your so called wannabes.

Thank you for all the input guys. I don't have the time to read and sift through all the previous threads in the forum just because of the hours of work I put in. But thanks for taking the time to post absolutely nothing useful.

@f.2 - Sounds like great housing criteria! Haha. Shiba Inus are great dogs! I plan on getting another. I'll take a look at Wackenhut. Not looking for anything crazy. I want to relax and go to school and use my post 9/11. I could live of the BAH and my disability pay checks and be fine. Finding a part time job would just be icing on the cake. Thank you for your service.

@V2 - Which one of those Town home communities would you say is the nicest, area wise? Definitely interested because a friend may tag along. Seems like a great deal. I definitely do not fall into the 'wannabe' category, and I do have my 214 that speaks for itself. $12 to stand near a potted plant? I wouldn't walk away from that offer, sounds sham! haha.

Prior service is a requirement pretty much nowhere which is why I said what I said. You have a mix of highly/over qualified dudes working side by side with lame ducks. Regarding the test site I know a guy that's been there for about 10 years and he had no previous background that would make him a quality candidate in comparison to all these multi tour studs but he's out there anyhow.

I would shoot for the Shadow Ridge location. Nice area, convenient shopping, convenient to the strip and 215 freeway. Right around the corner from LVAC the gym, close to Red Rock. Just a good spot to be.
