So since the Attorney General's office told the DMV they can't issue Nevada Seasonal ID to Canadians who are snowbirds and don't have a SSN, I sent an email to the LV Chamber of Commerce to see if they could issue some form of locals i.d. for snowbirds (US and Canadian) who can prove proof of ownership/residence in Las Vegas for a certain length of time. I suggested that some sort of Chamber card would work to promote businesses under their auspices and this in turn would increase business for various restaurants, casinos, auto mech/body work, markets, carpet cleaning, etc. etc. by offering deals to "snowbird" locals. Ads could indicate "Chamber Locals ID accepted" to draw in business. Anyways, I didn't get any kind of email back from them and I thought comments from this site might give me a bit of ammo to pursue my idea. What do you think?

I like the idea.

Having said the above, the issue is one of statutory authority (which the AG correctly applied). The Chamber cannot decide this issue - it's up to the legislature. You need to get a legislator to sponsor a bill and work it through the relevant committees.

When I returned to California I was very fortunate to get a clerk at the CA DMV that was just days away from retirement and had the moving van loaded already for her move to Summerlin. She understood that I was keeping my home here in Henderson as well and was kind enough to let me keep my NV license (without a hole punched in it) as well as re-issuing my CA license. She knew the importance of a "local" ID in Vegas.

I was thinking more along the line of a Chamber I.D. Locals card that cannot be used for anything legal like driving, medical, govt services or programs - only businesses that accept it and have agreed with the Chamber of Commerce to recognize it. Our little town's Chamber of Commerce issues Chamber bucks which basically is monopoly money to be used for discounts at business that belong and pay dues to the Chamber of Commerce. Thanks for the info tadtam...That may just do it through the DMV starting Jan 2, 2014 but I sure hate having to do the vision, driving test, etc. after driving for 40 years but I guess if I have to...sounds like a good money grab for the DMV anyways...LOL. I couldn't get through to the link you gave me but here are the details from DMV:

[i]The DMV will begin issuing Driver Authorization Cards on January 2, 2014. These cards will be marked "Not Valid for Identification" and may be used for driving privileges only. Drivers who cannot meet the proof of identity requirements listed above may be able to obtain a Driver Authorization Card if they present certain alternative documents. To qualify for a card, an applicant must present two proof of identity documents and two documents showing proof of Nevada residence.
Proof of Name and Date of Birth AND Proof of Nevada Residence Two of the following: Driver's license issued by a U.S. state, the District of Columbia or a U.S. territory Passport issued by a foreign government Birth certificate issued by a foreign government Consular identification card from Mexico or a similar government-issued document. No document which is written in a language other than English may be accepted unless it is accompanied by a verified translation of the document in the English language: Two of the following: Rent or lease receipt, Bill or other record from a utility dated within the previous 60 days, Bank or credit card statement dated within the previous 60 days, Insurance document with address listed, Medical record or bill with address listed. Applicants will be required to take all tests including the vision, knowledge and skills tests. See Testing. The cost of the cards will be the same as a Nevada driver license. See Fees. Motorists holding authorization cards will be subject to all related laws such as demerit points, suspensions and revocations, etc. Driver authorization cards will be valid for one year from the date of issuance. They will be renewed each year.

It's odd those Driver Authorization Cards will not work as Nevada I.D. yet require the same residency proof standards as the Seasonal I.D. card. And, you have to renew it every year? Man, that's a burden too. I have the Seasonal I.D. and it's good for 4 years.

Heck, Canadians are our best allies and a top trading partner. I think we should extend as many courtesies as possible to our Northern friends. What's good for them is good for us.

FWIW - I've found it much easier to deal with the Nevada DMV than Utah's. Nevada's was much quicker and easier to navigate.

Everything is so complicated if you don't have a SSN which we will never have as we are RETIRED and do not want to work..only PLAY in the USA. Legally we can't get a contract for a cell phone, and we have to dump a huge deposit ahead of time to get our utilities like cable, Nevada Energy, SW Gas, and on and on. Even though we show proof of our property purchase in our name and a legal document like a passport we still can't get a US cell phone contract. I pay and extra $15 a month on top of my $40 monthly on my Canadian plan for free roaming and 35 cents a minute (local and ld) and I could sure have cheaper long distance if I could get any US cell plan...arghh. Also, the police still tell you that a Canadian cannot purchase a firearm of any form for sport, protection, or collection unless you have a Seasonal I.D. from the DMV...which is not available anymore so agencies sure have not gotten together or kept advised of changes. I don't expect special privileges but it would be nice to be treated like any other homeowner. OK, now I've vented....I feel so much better. :-)

Do you have any friends/relatives with SSNs who would add a phone to their family plan for your use?

And forgive my ignorance but even if you don't WANT or PLAN to work, would you be able to get an SSN, if only for cell phones/utility deposits and what not?

Yes. My Canadian Niece just got her American citizenship and kept her Canadian too. However, it was an expensive and lengthy process and the bureaucracy involved was amazing. Frankly, it may not be worth it for many of our Canuck friends to pursue.
