Thought I'd share this since there seems to be a cult following for these in Las Vegas ...

Smith's (grocery) latest ad has a blurb on the fold-in

"Hatch Chiles are here ... Straight from New Mexico"
"It's Hatch Chile Roasting Time"

then below the picture ...

New Mexico Hatch Chiles
25 lb box, Limit 4
Free Roasting up to 2 boxes per visit
$17.99 ea With Card
Sale price good (for now) Wednesday, August 14th thru Tuesday August 20th, 2013

Is 25 pounds for $17.99 a decent price?
Obviously helps that they'll roast up to 2 boxes per visit for free.
Do they keep well if frozen after roasting?
I'll probably buy one box since it's just me & occasional visitors - how long should I expect 25 pounds to last with occasional use?

I dunno if Albertson's is still doing Hatch Chile roasting, but perhaps Smith's is trying to leverage an opportunity with Albertson's change in ownership ...

I'll leave it to Buzz & the other experts to extoll their virtues, share recipes, etc.

Which Smith's is this for exactly? I don't think they do it for all of them. Does it give an address?

Nothing. Nevermind. They're yucky.

I didn't pay attention to prices but the Albertson's on Durango/Farm had some as of yesterday.

First of all, thanks for the info. I have a feeling the new owners of Albertson's won't be roasting this year. But we still have plenty from last year. We've kept them for a pretty long time in the freezer, but we've decided that a big sack lasts us more than two years, and we'll throw away any left over in two years. To me, that's a dam good price. Not sure you'd do any better in Albuquerque where you can buy them all over town. Here's an example of what it would cost you to order just ten lbs., on line, frozen - FLAME ROASTED, HAND PEELED, FROZEN HATCH GREEN CHILE - FROZEN HATCH GREEN CHILE (WHOLE)

delgadob, we separate them into sandwich bags, then put those bags in large freezer bags. We put about six in a bag because when we use them we probably each only eat one or two at a time on sammiches or in eggs and it's hard to separate them once frozen. But we also separate the nicest ones for chili rellenos, and the short, split ones for other dishes. They'll keep a long time in the freezer.

Wish I could go to this sometime: Hatch New Mexico :: Chile Capital of the World! ::

30 pound bags go for 14.99 here in Denver at the local equivalent of Smiths . They have days when the roaster is brought into the parking lot for them, but usually people just buy smaller amounts already roasted. Very tasty, but I'd get sick of them before I used 30 pounds.
