You're welcome.

I would not recommend driving cab...not for you. You're gonna spend 12 hours making what you're making in 8 now, plus it's very seasonal.

As for cocktailing...frankly, all of the hottest, do what it takes, girls are all heading back to the clubs now that pool season is ending...they already have experience and an "IN".

Really the best shot is moving up within your present career and cutting expenses...it's tough, but after a few months you realize a lot of stuff you were spending money on, weren't actually bringing you enough joy to justify their expense....mostly a lot of things we think we need are really just distracting us from doing other things that we enjoy or need to do.

I hope it works out for you.

Me...I LOVE Las Vegas, but I'm on my way out to make more money elsewhere!

One thing LV did for me that is priceless....it taught me how to REALLY budget and save! It also taught me how to ignore distractions and become very disciplined.

You could, and might have to, get a second job.

I am rapidly going thru what funds I have, and I'm going to be in trouble soon. Should I forget working in casino & drive a taxi? Seriously, I have to do something. I am making $16 hr, but that barely covers expenses. And rumors of layoffs coming very soon. HELP please...taxi? waitress? Thanks!

I missed the layoff coming soon part....if you will qualify for benefits then maybe use that time to get into a casino.
I knew a girl that got hired as a cocktail runner at the Rio and it was like $17/hr no tips. I might have the correct term wrong but whatever she was was necessary to becoming a cocktail waitress and receiving tips.

The big problem with the casinos is the long hiring process when you're coming in from off the street and don't have solid contacts.

The cab thing might be necessary, but won't get you more income than you're already getting. There is also a bit of money and time to shell out to get the license.

I wouldn't leave your present job unless you have to though.

The Cosmo is going to be different because it's non-union (as the unions love to point out when protesting in front of it.) So there not going to be subject to all the work rules that the other casinos. That might make it easier to get in, but some there might have a harder time with management than at the union casinos.

The best way to break in is to apply for a beverage server, slot attendants (does very well with tips), bartender, or bar-back, you have the right idea about tipped salaries making good money, I used to be a cocktail waitress, & now I'm a dealer, also, when in, you can attend a blackjack school if you like, the pay is great, as long as you work for a big company like Caesar's Entertainment, Penn National Gaming, etc. Good Luck!!!

What is available to a new 18 year old LV high school graduate as far as with casino or noncasino in V? Military isn't an option. College would have to be self funded.

You mean as opposed to an OLD graduate?

Seriously, What do you want to do?

Figure that out then learn what it takes to get there.

LOL, as Cyborg said, you're a fresh high school graduate. The world is in your hands. Attend CSN or UNLV -- the tuition is extremely affordable if you work enough for the money. If you're low income, UNLV's financial aid is pretty good and most of their scholarships are need-based. Not sure about CSN since I don't attend but their tuition is cheaper and definitely way more affordable, even on a minimum wage job.

But as an 18-year-old, I promise you jobs in the casino will be difficult to find now. You have chances of working as a lifeguard in a smaller casino once pool season starts up again, though.
