Default Do People Live Without A Car?

Is life in Las Vegas without a private car possible? How inconvenient is it? How good is the transit system in Vegas and how often does it run? Does it have service after 6PM?

I've never lived there, but my answer would be NO from what I've seen. It seems to be a complete drivers' city with very minimal public transit, as is the case with many other cities in the Southwest and West Coast.

Just like most west coast cities, the public trans here in Vegas SUCKS! Get a cheap car with a/c! I would get a 90s Toyota or Honda that is in good shape for under 3000K.

Somewhat correct. But it is posible to live without a car if you plan it well. Basically there are certain major streets that have pretty good bus service 24 hours a day. Charleston for example. If you live anywhere on the west side within walking distance of Charleston you can get anywhere downtown or on the strip quite easily and at all hours. If you are young and ride a bicycle it is even easier.

Won't work if you want to live in the modern suburbs. Got to go to the older areas. Though some are quite nice.

I would guess 20% or so of the population lives by riding the bus.

It would be hard to live in LV without a car. I couldn't do it. There just isn't the same kind of public transportation available here VS Chicago and metro areas in the east.

Stick to the area between Charleston to the North and Tropicana to the South, Eastern to the east and Decatur to the west and you should be alright. The buses usually run every half hour but some run every hour. Like capt. said, bike riding makes it much easier so you don't have to always catch connecting buses, and you can put your bike on the rack in front of the bus.

Here's a link to the CAT transit website. http://http://www.rtcsouthernnevada.com/cat/ (broken link)

Waiting for the bus in the summer months can be brutal when it's over 100 degrees outside, but many people do it and survive just fine. Maryland Pkwy. is probably the best serviced route with the most amenities available on one street.

You are underestimating the human spirit. I got a client here who does have a car but takes it out of the garage less than weekly. It is actually a 75K automobile but that is neither here nor there.

She lives in the shadow of the stratosphere and quite well. Mostly she walks or bikes. I am not going to mention her job but she made the business section of the RJ when she came to town.

If you want it you can do it.

Again though it is a SW city. Them places is automobile oriented.

You need a car to have any kind of life in Vegas. Don't let anyone tell you otherwise.

A bus is limiting, because there are some places a bus won't go. But, depending on who you are, where you decide to live, a bus can work. But you have to live on or near a bus route. Refer to Chest's post. He is quite knowledgeable and you can learn alot from him.

Do people live without a car?????

Some people live in their cars. And those are the lucky ones. Many others live on the streets.

Most live in gated communities in a cookie-cutter house with an adobe roof. They are only half lucky.
