hello everyone, im new to this forum and although ive been searching to see if my questions can be answered in another thread, i cant find it. so heres the deal

in approx. a year my husband will graduate with a degree in casino management. he wants to start his career in Vegas. so we will be moving there from oklahoma. we are currently expecting our first child and by the time we move she will almost be one. i dont want to live in the main city and neither does he, so i need info on surrounding neighborhoods that are safe, quite and affordable. i know many people have suggested GV but what about schools ( i want to go to college) and our baby will likely attend kindergarden. and what about daycares for when im in school?? and any other tips that anyone can give me about starting in a new life in vegas with a baby will be great.

thanx again

GV and areas of Henderson will work So will Silverado Ranch. These are all convenient if Hubby works on the strip.

If he starts elsewhere There are equivalent options.

I would not sweat the schools on your first home. The probability that you will chose to move before the fifth year is very strong. Wages go up quite fast those first few years and with them expectations.

Do you plan to study at CSN or UNLV? If you're just starting out, CSN is way cheaper and offers most general education courses during the days and evenings and occasionally on weekends. It's a good place to start until you can get residency because UNLV's out of state tuition is brutal.

Henderson has the biggest CSN campus, which is in a safe quiet area and within 25 minutes of the strip. Silverado Ranch is closer to the Strip and to UNLV, and is still quiet and suburban for the most part.

The CSN campus closest to Summerlin is located at Ft. Apache/Charleston, also near a nice area called the Lakes. The 95 freeway which connects Las Vegas with the NW suburbs has been recently expanded.

There is also a CSN campus in North Las Vegas, a few miles south of where many posters on here believe is the best bang for your buck in terms of newly built housing - in and around the Aliante development.

As for schools, the entire school district has its problems, but on average the suburban and newer schools score much higher than the inner city ones.

good luck!

If you don't like living in the middle of it all, you can live in a quieter area outside of the beltway without paying much more. The real costs are in time and transportation to and from work/school.

I really have no apt. recommendations, but there are lots of fun activities to do with your baby depending on age - check out Family to Family Connection for free events. Also, the Belz (whatever it's called now) outlet mall has a big carousel and every Wednesday at 10:30 am they do story and song time and a free ride. The Santa at the Fashion Show mall is the best and usually cheapest prices plus they do a big free show throughout the day as Christmas approaches. The community centers usually offer the best prices on classes for kids of all ages, 1 and up, and I like the YMCA for swimming lessons for babies. The community centers also do various holiday events throughout the year. There are also lots of mommy groups you can join up with when you come out, just search the internet, or through FTF you can find other people with kids your age. Congrats on expecting your first child, I hope L&D goes smoothly!! Kids are even more awesome when they're your own!

YOu will be fine. Hubby is wise. There are perfectly suitable places for your initial launch.

Once you are ready to move come again and we will all help you and the kid find a good place to live until you go for your better place.

Now give hubby a high five from olecapt.
