I have a 1.5 ft, 2.5 ft and 3 ft lime and lemon trees planted in my backyard, all planted in a row, with about 3-4 feet between each other. I see frost covers online but they look really flimsy - does putting one around each tree prevent it from freezing?

Or do I get one giant cover and put it over them all for a greenhouse effect? I have seen a 10'x20' cover available to buy, which might work.

Do I just cover the bases of the trees with a blanket or towel?

Help. I am a plant noob and I know I need to do something quick. My 3' lime tree survived last year with some burlap wrapped around it, but the lemon trees are new.

Burlap. Cover the entire tree.

And, water them really well just ahead of the temperature change. I saw groves of orange trees in FL with ice around the base of the trunks.... intentionally, when the temps dropped well into the 20s. You don't have to go that far, but they give the same advice here in Phoenix about watering them.

I've read about folks using incandescent lights under the tarp to raise the temperature

Better yet, put Christmas lights on all of them, under the covers.... I've saved even bedding plants from freezing that way.

We also wrap our cactus with Christmas lights to keep them from freezing. We've only lost one in seven years this way.

Older Christmas lights would work but probably not the newer LED ones (not enough heat)
