Default Meeting real people in Vegas?

I'm seriously considering moving to vegas in 6 months or so, but I'm a little concerned about the social life there. I'm looking for some insight on how easy it is to meet new friends in this town, and especially single women. I kind of get the impression that it's a playboy type scene like Miami, where it's all about who you know and how much money you got. I would be working in a hotel hopefully on or near the strip. I'm 24 years old, white male from the midwest, middle class background.

ok...hard question to address, since i don't really know you therefore can't really speculate on your ability to meet new people.

what i can say is this: the west in general has more single guys than girls. instantly puts us single guys at a slight disadvantage (note the wording...slight; the discrepancy isn't that big).

in my experience here so far, the type of people (aka girls) you meet is directly related to where you meet them. who you know and how much $$ you have will always play a role (it did/still does in milwaukee, chicago, LA, etc.). but this, in my limited experiences here (i have been here 3 months) is more prevalent w/ your proximity to the strip. the higher end the club, the more that seems to come into play.

the girls i have meet at the local bars and the dog parks (places where they didn't necessarily get dressed up to go out to) seem less 'judgmental' (for lack of a better word). again, it does depend on the girl, but that is nothing new.

people i have met ranged in age from early 20's-mid 30's, and ran the full spectrum of professions (students, researchers, cocktail waitresses, strippers, designers, etc.).

again, a lot of how easy it will be for you to meet people will depend on your social skills and where you hang out. i'm relatively socially retarded (comes w/ the profession), but have been pretty lucky meeting people so far.

best of luck.

I viewed it as a playboy scene when I lived there from high school through college @ unlv. You'll probably make friends with the people you work with, but as far as finding 'real' people, you gotta keep at it. Vegas people tend to be of a different breed than the rest of the country.

Obviously nightlife tends to be flashy, it's vegas baby! But seriously, you're better off at the local casinos that have nightclubs (red rock, green valley ranch, etc). Also be keen on the local industry nights around the strip; that'll help you find some locals.

Oh, and if you find yourself partaking in the scene, you might want to check out a couple books that'll make things a bit easier:

"The Game: Penetrating the Secret Society of Pickup Artists"
"The Mystery Method: How to Get Beautiful Women Into Bed"

Both are on Amazon and are rated at 4.5 and 4 stars, respectively.

There's one other book that might help...Steve Wynn's "Checkbook".

for the record thanks for this post because ill be there around 6months as well. however jim ive heard opposite. we do know according to worldwide statistics there are more females than males (by a few million more), and that doesnt include men in prison. but you said in the west males outnumber females. and according to census data you are right about that. according to census data, only 2 state have higher male to female ratios, and thats nevada and alaska. LAS VEGAS REVIEW-JOURNAL: NEWS: Men continue to outnumber women in state
however, someone told me that las vegas has the most single moms and single women per ratio of people than anyone in the USA! do you think maybe because of the vegas industry, many females within the city limits dont respond to census data sent out? i have a few scenarios as to why they wouldnt. plus note the constant tourism of las vegas. now there is no way anyone can measure that except through observation. and i say female tourist outnumber the male. and come spring break? oh please...census data accurate or not, i just always feel females are all around when im in vegas lol.

I forgot to mention that you might want to look into attending UNLV for a few classes here and there. The student 'body' is roughly 51% female, and the average age (quoted at my grad ceremony in '05) for graduation is 25 (yes, for undergrad degree).

Other options include the Community College of Southern Nevada, Nevada State College, some vocational schools I can't remember, etc.

i like your version better than mine. my ratios come from a National geographic article (can't find it online right now, sorry ), some second-hand data from a friend of mine, and from this study:

It seems that 82 of the 100 largest cities have an excess of females over males. But of the 18 with a surplus of males number one,two and three are San Jose, Las Vegas and San Francisco. Las Vegas has 13.1% more men than women.

So single ladies if you want a happy hunting ground for that mate...Better odds here than virtually anywhere. And all you can catch in San Jose is a geek.

It may also explain why Las Vegas is so feisty...not enough broads. The dudes get all up tight when not having enough female companionship.
that being said....i do run into interesting, single girls while out and about, so ratios be damned!

For the OP, try meetup.com to meet others with your interests. There are many social groups in Las Vegas on that site. And they meet regularly.

I spent 7 months living in Las Vegas. If you are not college educated, you'll have no problem meeting people. If you are, then it is harder, because most people you encounter in Vegas are not college grads and not very intellectual. The best indication of the low education level in Las Vegas is that there is no city ballet or local symphony.
