I’m happy to say my daughter got into K.O. Knudson as a Magnet student. There were 700 spots and 2800 applicants (from what they tell me). We just celebrated our 1 yr moved to Vegas anniversary in July. So far I’m STILL loving it!!

movingon - what were the application requirements - was it all academic, or were there performing arts skills (like an audition for whatever skill the student has)?

We are at least 75% sure we are moving to Vegas next summer and I will have a rising 6th grader. Apparently middle school starts at 6th grade there so I am trying to figure out what we are going to do. He's not a superstar at all in performing arts but really enjoys it (is in choir and just started school band and jumps at any opportunity to perform in the very few school plays/the one musical we have had in the past 4yrs). He also is academically advanced (qualifies for our gifted program in math and science and hopefully would qualify there as well), so I'd like to have him have the opportunity to continue to be challenged. If he could also have the enrichment of performing arts, I think he could really enjoy middle school.

Any hints, words of experience...?

Default Performing Arts schools

Hey Movinon....I am moving to Vegas next year to open up a private performing arts school offering dance, vocal and acting lessons. If you dont mind my asking, did you seek out a private dance school or performing arts school for your daughter? and if so what was your experience?

I am a gaduate from LVA and that school is great. The academics are even harder than the extracurricular activities. Look them up online, and you'll see their SAt and Proficiency exams scores are some of the best in the country. As far as K.O. I know it is a great school as well because a lot of the people that attend LVA also went to K.O. It is a much better choice than a zoned school in my opinion.

I took my two sons to the new summer program at jrp very inexpensive they really have taught my sons the fundamentals of the industry as well as set them up with agents from Disney!!!! Now my boys are in the showcase and potentially will be scouted by various agents from Disney, nickelodeon, and baby gap! I'm truly excited and can't wait to see where this takes them.... Thank you so much Ms. Murphy!

My daughter is an eighth-grader at K.O. Knudson Middle School. She has been extremely successful in her major and minor, however the school is not always great in the core academic areas.

I am thinking about this school for my 5th grader. Question: If I live in the K.O. School Zone, can my daughter automatically be enrolled there? Or is there still an application process?

There is also an elementary performing arts magnet school, Gilbert Magnet School for Communications and Creative Arts. My daughter has gone to this school since first grade and we love it there. She is now a 5th grader, and hoping get into K.O. Which is a performing arts middle school or Hyde Park which is a math and science middle school with a great music program. The magnet elementary and middle schools are both on a lottery system. For elementary it is a straight lottery, for middle school they first look at the students grades, test scores, and attendance, then they take all of the students who qualify and put them into a lottery. If you live closer to the school you have a slightly better chance at getting in because you are put into a separate lotto pool. Same with if you have a sibling who is already in the school. A side note about K.O... It's not just a magnet school. It is a regular school with a magnet program. So there are many students who are zoned for the school and attend but are not a part of the magnet program. You have to apply to get into the program. Application deadline for 2012-2013 is already passed but I do believe they open it up to late applications later. Las Vegas Academy is the performing arts high school and they look at your academics and then you have to audition.
