if they didn't put the schools on the main roads that go in and out of neighborhoods, it would be a lot better...

I would scrap the whole plan. Not to be a downer, but I dread UNLV. I hope you are not expecting a "college town" or university setting, because it's not. It is more like an inner city community college. I know they have a few dorms or "off campus apartments", but I think they are mostly inhabited by drug addicts.

Matt...Matt...The guy is gong to dental school. Down off Charleston and Shadow. If dental schools are like medical schools he could not give less of a damn about the nature of the UNLV Campus...He may never see it.
He cares about workable and safe housing for his family and a commute that is not a killer...and not much else.
Note also that a large portion of all college dorms are home to drug users if not addicts and most seem to survive the experience. I went to college some 40 years ago...and our drug of choice was alcohol...but we sure managed to abuse it....
And it is not at all like a community college though it is more like Cal State than the University of California. But that is a long way from a community college.

I have yet to see a community college employ Pulitzer prize winning playwrights or have a basketball team reach the Sweet 16 of the NCAA tournament.
Obviously, UNLV isn't on par with the elite universities on the west coast like Stanford or Berkeley, but what you're describing seems to be some kind of vendetta fueled by anything other than common sense.

If you want to live near UNLV, then you should look east of the I-15.
If you stick SE of the school you will find some good areas. Avoid the ones with older apartment complexes and a mile radius of the school. Northern Henderson might be one of your options. Riding a scooter is not safe in this city, not even a car is that safe.
