Hi everyone.
I posted earlier that I took "advantage" of NV Energy's
Check me program, in which contractors affiliated (sanctioned)
By NV Energy come & do a seasonal check & have access
To rebates if your system is out of specification.
I was told by one of these companies that I needed to replace
A coil or upgrade to the new freon system.
My home warranty co sent a tech out this morning to verify.
He found no leaks. He said the large companies use
Sensitive electronic sensors which can register a problem
If any freon remains on it from previous jobs.
He said that if the sensor goes off, you still have to investigate to determine where & if there is truely a problem.

He found no leaks, no oil, no freon. He did hose off
The compressor so it wouldn't be a wasted
Trip.
He told me that many large ac company techs are
Paid by sales commissions. NV Energy does nothing
To dissuade these contractors from upselling or doing
Unnecessary work.
Beware, I thought I was hedging my bets by using one of
These contractors.
My air conditioner is fine!!!!!
FYI - this second co is A Tech Heating & Cooling.
They don't do unnecessary work.
I think we can't name companies here which we do not
Respect, so i will just leave it there.

I was just wondering about this last night and looking at the NV Energy website. I am wanting to put insulation in the attic over my garage and had read a review of a company on Angie's List that was negative in a similar way, but I can't remember the details. But I did contact a company with many great reviews on Home Advisor and he gave me a quote. He would be using fiberglass. I thought fiberglass was bad, he said it's not, so I guess I'm going to have to do some research on the issue. I will probably get more quotes too. His seemed high, definitely more than I'm wanting to spend.

I used cellulose in mine, as I had heard that the blown in fiberglass was not as effective.

Glad it worked out. You do have to be very aware with some of the large chain companies, because yes they will try to sell you stuff you dont need, including a new unit.

localinsight,

If a company performing work on behalf of NVEnergy is potentially involved with fraud or recommending unneeded repairs, I'm certain they would want to know about it. I would report it and let them investigate.

Speaking of a/c's...we want to get ours checked out, and have the ducts cleaned etc. Does anyone have a good recommendation for a non-scammy company to come out that does not charge too much? Or should we take advantage of the coupons that come to the house once in awhile, with their prices? Will they end up charging more than their ads?

I just had my A/C systems inspected. I have 2 A/Cs and one Heat Pump, was charged $85. He was here for 3.5 hours. Did thorough job, told me one was a little low on freon, but no need to worry unless temp goes above 120. In other words, did not "PUSH" any additional BS.
Company was Phoenix Air Conditioning.

Las Vegas Air Conditioning - Phoenix Air Conditioning Inc

We used Aire Serv and they are beyond honest. We called to schedule and appointment for a check-up, they checked our records and told us we didn't need a check-up for another 6 month. They installed our unit and did a wonderful job.

PS
I decided to call the first company & talk to them
Before I report them. I'm getting so jaded - but
What if all the do is replace whole or large components?
Who knows this could be business as usual these
Days.
