I lived in Vegas from 1984 until 2010 and have yet to look back...

Just my opinion.
Just curious what makes you feel unsafe at Lake Mead?

I think the poster meant that as 2 separate thoughts.. 1. Lake Mead is atrocious (not quite sure what they find atrocious about a body of water, unless they're referring to Lake Mead Blvd, then I understand) and 2. To many places in which to feel unsafe.

Thanks you are probably right.

I know Lake Mead is one of the more dangerous national rec areas but that's largely because people do things they shouldn't and end up needing rescue.

You're correct. Two separate thoughts. And I find the area by the main shore atrocious to swim in (by the grills). You need shoes due to the rocks, and it's filled with that sewage smelling mud that children throw at each other. It used to be a nice place as a child, but my perspective has clearly changed as an adult. Anyone who grew up in Vegas probably knows the shore I'm talking about, and most probably don't waste their time there, either. Equally interesting is how much the coast line has gone inward. Literally, a quarter mile..

If my friends and I took a trip back to the cliffs we used to jump off of in the mid 90's, we'd die. Bone dry.

You nailed it! I have lived for two years here. The only "safe" area is around west part of town and even here I hear at least once a week gun shots or see police choppers when I walk the dog. And because the weather is never normal, I am forced to walk the dog after 9-10 pm and early early in the morning. The low humidity gives a lot of health problems. My whole family now has skin issues. When it's windy it's nasty - the wind is hotter than the air and all the dust sticks in the mouth. School system is a joke and if you have kids you need to run away from here fast. Even the best schools here are below the national average. Yes, houses are cheaper to buy, but mostly in bad areas of town. If you want Sumnerlin or west side of Vegas you pay as anywhere else in the country if not even more. This is service city - low paying jobs, that support the casinos. It's commonly called the blue collar city. The education level of the population is low, this brings a lot of problems with it. Drivers are heat washed - probably loosing many brain cells in this heat. We are trying desperately to move away from here, the only reason why we got here because of my husband's job, that forced him to relocate. Oh and our cars got hit 3 times for two years, where the last car accident the other driver lied and we had to fix our car on our own dime. Honesty is not in most people's vocabulary. Also good neighbors or deep friendship are fiction here too.

Ok, other than those points, you're dead on!

I see you love generalizations and hyperbole. Many of the things you complain about will follow you as they are not specific to Vegas. I hereby revoke your right to speak on education until you have mastered the usage of the words loose and lose.

Pros: weather, housing value (love Aliante and Centennial), locals (especially love the diversity), low maintenance yards, lack of mosquitos, no snow, very reasonably priced utilities, tons of beer festivals, and a never-ending supply of entertainment events. It is also nice to live at a tourist destination because it makes convincing distant family to visit much easier.

Cons: sinus allergies, lack of Texas Roadhouse restaurants(one of my favorite chain restaurants), and cockroaches (although they have proven simple to keep out of the house).

Now, now. He or she may have attended school in Las Vegas.

Yea, I disagree agree with most of what you said.
