CapitalOne gave me 2 free Uber rides up to $30 each. I gladly used them on a previous trip in California.
BTW, Uber gives free first ride to any new customer anyway. They have a lot of cash to burn.

AFAIK, Uber has no patents or other ways of limiting their competition. If Uber screws over their drivers, and competitor can start a rival app, and take the drivers away. Of course that competitor has to attract riders. So there should be healthy competition between the services, for both drivers and riders.

That is correct, e-commerce business seldom have any pattern. Ebay, Amazon, Netflix, Youtube...etc, none of them have any pattern over their business model, but they are extremely successful with little or no competition.

Critical mass issue. You need at least a few hundred drivers to start up. I would think the likely competition is Lyft for similar or the local cab/limo companies. Bell or similar could easily start an app and use both their own cars and drivers and independent contractor cars and drivers.

It is not a business that a couple of people could start up with little money.

I know about Lyft, and I agree. I was just pointing out that Uber has no special advantage, except that it was first to create this type of system (or at least to penetrate the market with it.) If they drive off drivers or riders, someone else will pick them up (quite literally in the case of the riders.)
