Our reputation is just...

Long-hauling could be black mark on Las Vegas’ GOP convention hopes

Quote:

Las Vegas is angling to host the 2016 Republican National Convention at the
same time the Nevada Taxicab Authority is trying to shake off a reputation for
lax enforcement of taxi drivers who long-haul passengers to illegally jack up
fares.

It is one of eight cities vying to host the convention, where the GOP will
nominate its presidential and vice presidential candidates. The competition is
fierce because winning the event will bring lots of attention and money to the
host — potentially an estimated $400 million to Southern Nevada’s economy.
Long-hauling could be black mark on Las Vegas

Good ole Cleveland. Well, there that goes.

I was just surprised that our taxi system behavior would affect a choice for an upcoming convention.

There are consequences for our actions -- ripping off tourists the minute they step out of the airport leaves a bad taste in their mouths. Then we hit them with resort fees upon check-in. Then after the serious business of fleecing them out of all their money at the tables, clubs and restaurants, we long-haul them back to the airport for one last screw-job.

I don't see why we can't employ "mystery fares" who earn their salary with the fines levied on cabbies (and their cab company) who long-haul. (Unfair to the cabbies under the current system. But they taxi companies will change their policies if they're racking up 50 fines a day.)

Surprises me every time that you think casinos put a gun to people's heads and swindle them (i.e. the term "fleecing"). Don't you understand that people make a conscious decision to gamble, go to clubs, or eat at nice restaurants? The casinos, clubs, and restaurants provide a service. People choose to utilize those services for entertainment. Why the disparagement? Because YOU don't find gambling fun, no one should?

Divide the city into 4 or 5 zones, flat rate in a zone and a flat rate going from one zone to another. No meters needed. Also complete monorail to airport.

And that's why there's the proverb, "A fool and his money are soon parted."

Don't get me wrong, I LOVE gamblers. They subsidize my property taxes. They pay my salary. They're making it possible to achieve my goals of moving out of here and opening a business in a nicer area. If they want to throw their money away, I'm quite happy to pick some of it up. Nobody is putting a gun to their head. But they are most CERTAINLY being fleeced. We take 100% of their losses and don't pay them 100% of their winnings. The "vig" pays the bills. If people saw the big picture, they'd stay home and play video-poker on their computer for no money.

But they're supposed to arrive happy and leave happy. Long-hauling them is contrary to the goal of keeping them happy so they can come back next year and lose all the disposable income they made. If they feel they're being nickeled-and-dimed every minute of every day, they'll throw their money away elsewhere.

I don't think you can control people leaving happy.

Unhappy tourists won't come back and that is perfectly OK. For most people, when they come here to gamble and hook up with chicks, they know what they are getting into.

Resort fees are always noted when making online reservations. It's not a surprise!

Resort fees are more openly noted now compared to about a year or two ago. During the "great resort fee hike", we would have a new thread every day about the "surprise bills".

I am sure that Ohio's having 3 times as many electoral college votes as Nevada, and the facts that a) for more than 50 years, no candidate has won the Presidential election without winning in Ohio, and b) Ohio is a very closely divided R vs. D State all had little to do with why the GOP chose Cleveland over LV. Yes, it had to be that LV taxi cab drivers are all a bunch of corrupt, long-hauling, thieves and Cleveland manages to only permit the most honest of the human race drive cabs.
