We're moving to LV in a couple of months from Massachusetts. Husband's brothers have lived out there a while and his parents retired last year from MA to Summerlin. We're following now that he's found a job. We have a 5 yo son who will start kindergarten in a few weeks and an almost 2 yo daughter. We're mainly looking in Summerlin as I think it's the prettiest part of Vegas that I've seen and we want to be close to the grandparents. We've seen quite a bit there that we like but have also seen a lot of beautiful homes up in the Providence area that are a little more our style. I've read back through all the old threads but haven't seen much about the area recently. Is it a good place for a family? We're in a small town now and are good with it being quiet but are there things nearby- grocery stores, etc? I know we'd have to drive to Summerlin for the library which is a bummer but how close is other stuff?

Thanks @tadtam ! Saw that there was a library in Centennial last night- that's great, big library user! We were a little concerned about the area as all of the old posts mentioned the problems with the developer and we don't want to buy somewhere that might have problems... But quiet and little traffic sounds good to us small-town folks!

An extremely nice community loaded with families with small kids. In fact the only drawback may be that the school is overloaded. Sold a nice place in there to a young couple with a three year old. That tract was little kid city.

ONe of the larger tracts has a very nice clubhouse and pool.

One minor correction...the run to Walmart/Sams Club is a little less than 5 miles. You can also get to a lot of stores very quickly by running east on 215...Costco/Winco etc.

Thanks @lvoc ! We definitely want to be somewhere with lots of young families. How about the Stone Mountain/Iron Mountain areas? Would be a little farther from the in-laws in Summerlin but commute for husband would be about the same and that area loosk nice as well..

Nice area in 89131. One caution. It was hit very hard in the bubble burst and you may find the less expensive blocks are loaded with renters. Nothing wrong with renters but when the neighborhood gets too rent rich it can have problems. You can check any block or tract by looking at the assessors site and seeing if the tax address is the same as the property address. Gets over 50% rental I would rent but not buy for owner occupancy..

If you like 5 foot deep backyards and the block wall is two stories high on a three story house, this place is for you!

Not true at all. You might be able to find a few triples but they are very rare in Providence. Sold a home in Providence last year that was 1600SF single story 3/2 with a 6,000SF lot. Room for a small pool though not needed as across the street from the club pool. Had a full self powered package.

We've seen some listings in Providence that seem to have decent sized backyards by Vegas standards. Am fairly familiar with the "typical" backyard as both my brothers-in-law, inlaws and an Aunt have places out there so we've seen quite a few neighborhoods and houses. It will be a change for us for sure but we're hoping to find something with a little grass maybe, room for a small swingset, and hopefully walkable to a larger park.
