I enjoyed the nicotine and the experience of smoking. What got me to quit was feeling self conscious about smelling bad in public. I previously had a job where I could smoke at work. When I went back to college I was placed in a nonsmoking environment where I realized how bad I stunk. The money and health benefits were a bonus, but not smelling awful was the prime motivation.

It's funny, but usually the only place I smell cigarette smoke these days is in Vegas, and it is one reason I do not gamble (other than the whole waste of money thing). I do not want to be breathing it in, and taking the smell with me when I leave. Casinos do NOT have good ventilation, and even if they did, they can't help you if there is someone right next to you just holding a burning cigarette.

I have to agree with you complete. I find myself heading to MN as opposed to NV to gamble because I like to breathe while I gamble.

That article in OP is ridiculous and contains many false statements. For example:

Quote:
In Las Vegas, smoking is now banned in all public places except casino floors.
Smoking is allowed anywhere that minors are not allowed, not just casinos. Strip clubs, bars, restaurants that are 21+, brothels and tobacco shops are also exempted.

Quote:
Frick pointed out that, of the 23 states with commercial casinos, 18 have already outlawed smoking in casinos.
This is not correct.

Some ban smoking everywhere else, yet allow it in casinos. According to this article, states that exempt smoking in casinos, yet ban it everywhere else are

Quote:
Connecticut, Kansas, Iowa, Michigan, New Jersey, Rhode Island, Maine, New Mexico, and Wisconsin.
Quote:
Florida, Louisiana, Nevada, Pennsylvania, Arkansas and Indiana have legalized casinos that are exempted from state smoking bans that also exempt bars. A dozen states, several with casinos and/or off track betting, have no smoking ban at all.
Here is the Wiki state smoking ban article it links to where it got the info.

There are three casino states with no smoking ban at all: Mississippi, Missouri, and West Virginia. If you include OTB-only sstates, that expands to Alabama, Wyoming, Texas, Virginia and Kentucky. Georgia allows smoking in video lottery establishments.

Quote:
Even the World Series of Poker became a smoke-free event for the first time in 2014
The WSOP has been smoke free since it moved to Rio in 2004. They banned it in the hallways about two years later.

The article also ignores the fact that Nevada repealed a good chunk of its smoking ban in 2011. Are we then going to go completely the other direction?

Every state that enacted a smoking ban in casinos has seen a drastic drop in revenue. The Federal Reserve's study about Illinois shows how obvious that is. Nevada is not going to risk that in "Sin City".

While I don't smoke, and don’t like the smoke, it has never crossed my mind to not enter a casino because of it. Since I don't gamble anymore, this limits visits to getting a $37 coffee and a movie. Ban smoking and you alienate a large percentage of your current and potential customers. Keep smoking and you lose zero customers. Most non-smokers suck it up and go anyway.

That isn't true. I love the chicken-fried steak at Longhorn Casino on Boulder. My wife loves it, too.

We don't go there anymore because the place smells like an ashtray. They can't keep the smoke out of the dining area. And the air is blue with stale tobacco.

I am certain that MOST non-smokers aren't going there either. Because the last time we went, we were the only two people outside of the employees who didn't have a cigarette dangling from their lips.

Sounds like you're talking about a change for the worst. If all casinos went non-smoking tomorrow, that would also be a change for the worst - revenue loss and all of it's implications.

I disagree. Smokers still fly even though the airlines have banned smoking for years. Smokers will still go to the casinos. They'll just have designated smoking areas, or outside in 120f heat.

Our corner drugstore no longer sells cigarettes. I never thought I'd see that day happen.

There is ample evidence that casinos lose 20% of their revenue after banning smoking. I would like to see a casino go smokefree in LV to see if it works. Rampart seems like it would be the best fit for that.

IMO there is certainly a market for a nonsmoking casino. OTOH, forcing the entire market could be dangerous.

Harrah's tried it in the 90's and it bombed. If the casinos thought they could still make money and go non-smoking they would. But they know that they can't, so they won't.

I have to agree! Just hit Red Rock Casino on any given night, especially on the weekends and you'll see the slot machine area designated for NON-smokers is always empty, yet the rest of the place is packed, lol

I don't smoke and never have, nor does anyone in my family but I don't mind smokers. After all, they have a right to enjoyment and smoking is part of their enjoyment

Blessings
