Question Any Tips on Applying for Jobs in LV but Still Living and Working in Another State?

I am currently living and working in San Francisco,CA. I have been applying for tons of jobs that fit my profile (college educated, and I am an executive assistant/admin assistant at a architecture/design firm), thru job engines such as Monster, Careerbuilder, etc. but then I got a response back from one of those employment agencies who wanted to do an interview with me. I called and explained to her that if it was possible, if we could do the interview over the phone since I am in California, then she went on about "don't bother applying until you're a resident, because this is such a transient city and employers don't want to hire anybody if you are still living out of state.
Does this ring true to the people who have moved to LV before/after finding a job? I would love some insight on what is the best possible plan of action. I was thinking of maybe getting a PO Box, just so I could have a LV address to put on my resume (if you're even allowed to do that). Thoughts?

Human cloning (as opposed to clowning) sure would be helpful in this application.

I moved from the Bay Area also.. this is what I would suggest if your serious about your move to LV.

1) Get a Local 702 phone #
2) Get a Local Address of some sort. If your know someone that is willing to let you use their address would be best. Or even a Mail Box Etc. that type of box.
3) Be ready to fly out. Flights are cheap from SFO and you can be here in an hour in a half.

Good Luck on your search. The weather might be your biggest shock since Bay Area weather is almost perfect year round, but Vegas can be brutal in the Summer months. Also scope out the neighborhoods that you might want to live in.

I adjusted really easy because I am self employed and didn't have to search for a job. Keep in mind this city is not for everyone and just do your homework before you commit.

Live here........sorry....but it's really the only way....As a department Manager, I am not going to consider you for employment if I have to wait for you to be employable.
Assuming you get called for an interview.....it will be tomorrow.
Assuming you get hired, you will be sent out for processing.....tomorrow.
Assuming you arent a druggie or a wanted killer, you will be given a start date....tomorrow.

Unless you're the greatest thing since sliced bread, we can't afford to wait for you to give notice, pack your stuff, move here, find a place to live etc etc etc....

My suggestion [if you truly want to live and work in Las Vegas].rathole your money...quit your job...pack your bags....move....then look for a job....be prepared to spend from several weeks to several months....but when asked "Can you start tomorrow?" the answer better be "Hell yeh" .....good luck.....

thanks for the posts. I was born and raised in florida so the weather won't bother me. (i actually think SF is kinda cold most of the time because of the fact that i'm used to wearing flip flops and shorts). I just ordered a pre paid cell with a 702 number. I just need to figure out if I want to take the plunge and just quit my job now and move or wait a little bit....tough decisions......

It is very common for places not to call you for an interview unless you are a resident, but that is not always true. I know that the company I work for, here in Vegas, has on occasion, flown people in for interviews and even paid for them to move here. This was done when we were searching for the perfect person. But it does happen. I agree, one of the best things to do is pick up a cheap cell phone with a 702 number. If you do move out here without a job lined up, make sure you bank away a few thousand bucks first.

It has been said, but it is reality, you have to live here.

Are you not making enough money in SF to live? Or you just don't like SF? I personally like the Bay Area but find it too expensive if you want to be a home owner. I have personal friends that dont mind renting and paying crazy taxes to live in SF. You just have to make that big risk and make that move. Good luck.

Dont' get me wrong, I LOVE SF! I definitely am making enough money to live in the city, but I still can't get past the fact that I'm paying an arm and a leg to live in a 500sqft studio on the borderline of cracktown, where for the price I'm paying here in the city, I could easily afford a nice 3-4bd house. Thanks for the luck!

I feel your pain! I was paying an arm and a leg in the Bay Area also and was sick of not owning anything. That is the attraction of Las Vegas to people that come from expensive parts of the country. There are plenty of good rentals for a good price. If your looking to buy, there is also a lot of good deals now and in the future. Again... good luck and keep us posted!
