It's LOS FELIZ, not Lake Mead that has the view. Los Feliz dead ends just past Sunrise Mtn High School. You can see the entire runway except where hangars block the view.

As a former Air Force cop, I know and understand what it takes from a security perspective and how to move people. I have worked many Open Houses and multiple Space Shuttle landings at Edwards where, when they were still pretty new to see, they would draw well over a million spectators to the base. This event had none of it. No wonder we are quagmired in wars that we will never finish properly. Today's military can't even pull off an open house efficiently.

This was the first Nellis Open House I have tried to attend and after spending 2 hours in line for the bus with what I could only predict would be about an hour more, we bailed outta line and headed home at 1PM since if my prediction of another hour was right just to get on the bus would have gotten us on base with probably about 45 minutes of the show left.

The main problem was that we ended up in a line that stretched back beyond The Bullring and even then wrapped around the parking lot for perhaps another 200 yards. It took well over an hour before we could even see the buses and then we discovered that there were actually 4, 5 or maybe even 6 lines that we could have walked directly to instead of standing in the long ass line we had been in. But then even when we made it to the multiple line area, we were moving towards the buses at a rate of about 3-5 steps every 5 minutes.

So yeah, even after waiting 45 minutes to get off the highway and then another 2 hours in line, we said "eff this" and walked back to the car and got outta there.

Never again!

They said around 75,000 people there today. Even if you get dropped off or take cab they want you to go to the speedway and take the shuttle. Glad I decided not to go.

I have been to many airshows Edwards AFB, March AFB and don't remember a big problem getting on the base and off the base.

My nephew, his friend and I checked out the show last Saturday. Drove to the Speedway and got in the bus quick. Not as many displays I thought this year compared to 2 years ago. On the way back we waited until later so obviously the lines were longer. Overall we enjoyed the show. My nephew and his friend even talked to one of the Thunderbird pilot. We'll go again in a couple of years.

Looks like the same exact show I saw at Kunsan in 87 or 88. Glad I didn't stick around and wait in 3 more hours of lines on Saturday.

My favorite air show was when they had the SR71 doing touch and goes and flybys with full afterburner. I think it was at either March AFB or Norton AFB.

I grew up (and still live, 5 days a week) just a couple of miles from Plant 42. That was a daily air show for years for me, but always impressive.

Yes the Edwards air show was good too. The SR71 was actually built in Burbank along with a lot of others. I'm sorry they closed it. I still have fond memories when I worked there.

When the L1011 was winding down they would fly guys from Palmdale to Burbank to work on our project. Red and white 737 which I'm sure you have seen.
