Just wanted to share an incident that happened to my husband a few weeks ago. He's retired and was playing a slot machine at the Suncoast on a weekday morning. A man approached him and asked if he could spare money for bus fare. My husband said no, and the man walked away. But what was interesting is that a few seconds later, a Suncoast security guard came over and asked my husband what the man said to him. They were obviously suspicious and perhaps needed proof of what he was doing before escorting him out. I know the last thing the Suncoast wants is having their customers bothered, and I was impressed at how fast they acted.

It ( panhandling ) has gotten so out of control these days. It used to be confined to certain areas for the most part, but now I see it all over town.

The ones that pick good spots are easily making $20 or more per hour. I've seen some of the same faces on the same exact corners since I moved here in 2009. I've also run into at least a handful of people who would be just as grateful for a sandwich.

On a side note, I had a lady knock on my door at home panhandling two weeks ago. Five minutes later she was still outside in front of the house. I asked her what she was doing and she said she was looking for cigarette butts.

I was staging in the taxi line a while ago at Tropicana. Like most drivers, I work way too much. Anyways, it was a really nice morning but painfully slow that day... So I'm sitting with all the windows down, mind way off in Lala Land.
By the time I heard the rattling of the shopping cart, the guy was already at the side of my cab...

"Heyyy... Hey you in the cab!"
"Uhh, yep?"
"You know Vinny?? Works for Checker!"
His breath was toxic... Sweet Jesus, it smelled like old socks and cat pee all in one...
"Don't know him"
"Works for Checker, you gotta know him"
"Sorry, there's like 800 Checker drivers"
"Well call dispatch and ask for Vinny... When you get him, tell him JoJo's got his rock. It's emerald cut."

He then shuffled away.

If there ever was a panhandler's convention held in town, would anyone show up?

I've only been here a year and a half, but have noticed the same people at the same corners as well. I take the Sahara exit off the 15 fairly often. Same guy at the left turn lane.

I've only been approached once in a casino, and it was at Palace Station. Homeless dude trying to bum a cigarette. Other than that, it's the usual suspects outside of supermarkets and in gas station parking lots.

The other day I saw a panhandler next to a sign flipper. I wondered to myself which pays better. After all, they are both basically just holding a sign. one gets my respect though.

  • Young girl carrying a little gas can "need gas money to get home" = professional pan handler.
  • "I need food for my baby" + baby in stroller = professional pan handler. Accepts cash or sells Similac at black market bodegas
  • Old woman with cane asking for money, cane is a prop. Professional pan handler
  • Guy with a scab on his leg and a crutch (prop, not functional) = professional pan handler.

These are all real people in the valley right now. I guess it makes people feel good giving them money; just understand you are realizing the pan handling profession.

Give to a shelter if you want to help people that legitimately need a hand up.

Nearly every time I see a panhandler at an intersection, some moron (and almost ALWAYS in an SUV) gives them money. They should just give their money to drug dealers so as to eliminate the middle-man.
