I'm the resident Las Vegas hater on this forum. I don't like it here. I gave the place a chance. And the longer I stay here, the less I like it. My wife feels the same way. We're gone the minute we no longer have to take care of family. We have managed to work our way up the financial ladder here because of the low cost of living. But our overall quality of life is a pale comparison to back home.

Others just love it here. I can't wrap my head around what they see in this place. The surrounding area? Sure -- the Southwest is beautiful. Las Vegas? It's a tawdry, cheap place filled with a lot of cheap people.
I was only out there once for work (last February) and I unfortunately didn't have the chance to venture outside the strip. It was my first time though so I was glad on my off-time I could just browse and "take in" the experience.

Sorry you hate it so much... We'll just have to see for ourselves once we're there, and many that I have spoke to do enjoy it out there so that's good. Plus they'll take care of most if not all my moving expenses which is a huuuuuuuuge plus.

I've been an east coaster my whole life... Lived in Staten Island, NY for my first 9 years of and have lived here in PA the last 22 of them (Poconos, Penn State University, Philadelphia, and now the Lehigh Valley). A change is certainly welcomed... and my transfer option just so happens to be Las Vegas so... bring on the new adventure.

Then I strongly suggest a recon mission prior to accepting the transfer. Come here, stay in a house (via homeaway or AirBnB or similar). Rent a car. And stay away from the resorts.

Even if you like to gamble, most residents stop going to the Strip soon after moving here. (Again, some just love the Strip and look at living here like living in the vacation dreamland.) That might turn out to be you, too. But if it is, the Strip isn't going anywhere.

Go grocery shopping, fill up your gas tank, look at model houses and houses for sale in your price range. Maybe you can find a local Realtor who will be glad to unlock some listed houses for you. But they're basically all the same in your price range (provided you buy relatively new construction). And I would steer toward new(er) construction -- it costs FAR less to keep an energy efficient house cool when it's 115f outside.

And ideally, you do this in July. Make dinner when it's more than 100f outside. Don't cheat and order out. See what it's like getting into your car when you can't find a shaded parking spot at 5pm when grocery shopping after work.

My old roommate quit a job over non covered parking spots for employees. He said that he just couldn't do it anymore. He also didn't have AC either.

Here's how the weather works. Out east you go out in the summer and enjoy yourself. You stay in over the winter and freeze yer butt off getting into the car after work.

Here you go out in winter and enjoy it and fry in the summer when you get in your car after work.

That being said we're retired so we don't fry unless we choose to.

Thanks for the advice... I am going to certainly try and get out there for a recon mission for sure. Luckily I have a friend who lives there and she's more than happy to house me/us if we are able to get out there. Obviously if I do that I'd make sure to do all of the above.

As for the strip, hey... I'll be working on the strip and at the Venetian, and just like my current job here at the PA Casino, it's the last place I want to be during my down time! Now it's not to say we'd venture out every so often for a show or dinner but yeah... I get it!

I understand about the heat and it can get extremely hot... and I'm used to living in an extreme weather climate especially being out here in the Northeast. Yeah, I know... getting into an extremely hot car sucks for sure, but it also sucks getting out to your car in the extreme cold to get it started and warmed up... or freezing your butt off trying to scrap frost or ice or snow off your car! Temps here can get below zero in the winter and above 100 in the summer with extreme humidity. We deal with snow, sleet, freezing rain, rain, powerful thunderstorms, tornado possibilities, etc. etc. So sure... the extreme heat out there during the summer will take getting used to but the weather out there is a lot less volatile!

Whether Vegas is the place for me/my family or not is obviously up in the air at this point, we'll just have to find out. Bottom-line is this is a career decision and the transfer is beneficial if I want to continue to succeed and grow. Hey... I guess it could be worse, the transfer option could be like North Dakota or Northern Minnesota or something, haha.

Well it's official... my family and I are moving to LV.

Got my offer package late last week and officially signed the dotted line this morning. We fly out this weekend for 3 days to house hunt and as long as everything goes smoothly we'll be moving during the last week of the month ahead of my March 2nd start.

Exciting new chapter in our lives...... =)

Please post during your house search. I am going to buy in the spring valley area or 89139 area in the next 3-5 months. Would like to hear your experience.

thanks,

Been here since the end of October. Learn to be a defensive driver. It's necessary here.

Expect to meet nice people. A lot of nice people. Winters here aren't. Quite the change for a Midwesterner.

Enjoy.

Research doctors very carefully.
