Nobody wants to hear:

1) Newcomers usually need to "put their time in" before landing even half-way decent jobs.
2) The high-paying casino jobs go to the people who have already put their time in at the casino.
3) Poor credit score, a criminal record or spotty employment history are usually dealbreakers.
4) Experience in East Cupcake, NJ is not the same as experience in Las Vegas.
5) Many careers simply do not pay here what they pay elsewhere. (Ask anyone in IT.)
You always have the option of ignoring a thread or post. There is no rule you have to read everything on a forum, let alone respond to someone else's post. We get the same type of thing in the DC area forums. Like most of the regulars there, I pick and choose which ones I read or respond to based on whether I feel doing so would be wasting my time or not. If I feel it is a waste of my time I certainly don't bother to waste time telling them so.

No, I do not think such people will do well. But it has been my experience that employers in other parts of the country are more willing to take a chance on a newcomer. We don't have a glass ceiling so much as we have a "newbie ceiling." The decent jobs go to the people who have lived here awhile.

It's the same mindset as when locals didn't bother talking to newcomers for six months -- after the "E.Z. Divorce" deadline came and went and people were sure that the newcomers were staying awhile.

Reading some of these threads and post really makes it seem like it's impossible to move to Las Vegas. I'm in my late 20's and I would like to eventually move but I know it will take time. I'll be 28 in a few months so I probably won't be able to move until I'm in my 30's. I wish I would have started preparing before now but I guess it's never too late. I'm not saying that I'm too old but I just really don't know.

In LV, there is a such thing as being too old. Or too short, too fat, too flat...

I have some family members/friends that work on the strip that are not "model material" so they get transferred to differnt departments during the summer. On the flip side, I have family/friends that are model material that work on the strip and seem to get their way in just about any position they want.

During the pool season, the "beautiful types" seem to be highly desirable. It has caught on all over the strip.

The thing is, if you don't have someone you can live with when you get here, how are you going to qualify to rent an apartment? Would you want to stay in one of the places that rent by the week? You will pay a lot more than if you had an apartment and they are usually pretty slummy places.

Tens of thousands move here every year. We did it in 2013, and are loving every minute of it. Definitely not impossible, just have quite a few thousand bucks in cash to get you through the initial time you're here.

We went through about $15,000 in the first couple of months in deposits and furnishing the house. Fortunately I came here with a job, so it wasn't a big deal, but if you're coming without knowing anyone, and without a job, it may be a bit stressful until you get settled in.
