In our previous back yard we had hop toads, probably due to the waterfall we had, but they disappeared. We also had a resident hawk that caught birds and left the head and feathers on limbs of our trees. In areas that have plenty of undeveloped land you'll see all kinds of critters until it gets too built up for them to survive. We had lots of ravens in the past, but I seldom see one in town anymore. We have a Palo Verde tree in the yard that attracts two woodpeckers in the spring. Lots more hummingbirds here than we used to have for some reason. In fact lots more of all kinds of birds than we used to have. They were actually pretty rare until all the imported landscape trees. You could walk along the trail at the Pueblo community and ground squirrels would be all over the place; but I think the HOA had them exterminated.

I've been here for ~18 months. I've seen:

Lots of bird life: hummingbirds, great-tailed grackles, brewer's blackbirds, quails, hawks I can't identify, turkey vultures. Oh, and all those ducks and geese at Sunset Park that my dog goes bonkers over. Also see roadrunners in Sunset Park every now and then. Saw a big flock of mountain bluebirds once (like maybe 10-12 of them)--really beautiful--over near Exploration Peak Park. Also see scrub jays and, up toward Reno, Steller's jays in the mountains.

See burros pretty regularly if I'm headed west on Blue Diamond toward Red Rocks.

Coyotes, jackrabbits, regular rabbits (is it a common thing for people to dump their fluffy white pet rabbits in parks here? I see quite a few of them). I have seen stray cats and dogs, but it's definitely not as common as other parts of the country.

Palmer's Chipmunks up in the Spring Mountains, though that's not really in the city. Some ground squirrels every now and then.

Plenty of cockroaches in the spring, but not nearly as many as I had in the house I grew up in as a kid in northern New England!

Oh--tarantulas in October! Apparently that's when they have some sort of migration?

I have a handful of lizards that scamper all over the walls in the backyard during the summer months. Also had a house cricket for a while. Husband wanted to kill it, but I was always taught that a cricket in the house is good luck.

Haven't yet seen a scorpion or a rattlesnake, happy to keep it that way. Seen plenty of timber ratters on the east coast, almost stepped on a baby one once, not a fan.

Seen several dead mice and rats in my neighbourhood but no live ones; I guess people are aggressive with the poison.

Tarantulas spend most of their lives underground, or not far from their hole. Male tarantulas are the ones that migrate. They venture out looking for a female when their young tarantula's fancy turns. It's not bravery, they're just so horny they take a chance on birds getting them just to make out with a cute girl tarantula.

What is that black bird with the long pointed beak that makes clicking noises? I always see them in packs.

It's literally all black, and the tail has a visibly weird (different) configuration during flight. Larger than a sparrow, kind of thin, smaller than a crow.

I saw Sonic the Hedgehog on the strip... And Chewbacca pumping gas.... The Pink Panther riding in a car... And a very large alligator doing what looked like the twist in the Mirage....

I have seen all those at the wetlands but I have never been able to get a picture of a road runner.

Be careful, hummingbird feeders attract snakes.
