Default Cost of Living and Me

Just curious about the cost of living. Houses seem to be cheaper than here in MD. But not sure about water, electricity.......

I'm making about 60k a year now in MD and living fine. If i go out there my base will be 60k but with OT and such probably going to make 80k before taxes.

So pretty much with 60k a year can someone live well in vegas?

Housing is dirt cheap out here right now. Although, the market is a bit unstable, so renting a home is sometimes the better option.

And I think you should be able to live well enough out here on your income. School teachers make less and manage fairly well (I know a few - they all own homes and can live comfortably).

No state taxes???? Ohh yeah!! Are there any looming city fees?? Like in Philadelphia. What about sales tax?

I am a big fan of the lack of state taxes. Not only will my base salary go up 20k a year if i got the job. But the lack of state taxes would be another 5 to 7k in my pocket.

a 7.75% sales tax on just about EVERYTHING you will ever buy except food. Because you won't be paying income tax doesn't mean you will suddenly have lots of extra money floating around. Vehicle registration is very expensive here, and insurance is also much higher than in many other places. On your salary, you'll do fine here. If you rent, you will have plenty of money left over to enjoy the finer things Las Vegas has to offer (assuming you're not up to your eyeballs in debt). Good luck.

Auto registration depends on where your comming from. Comming from CA my registration is only higher by a little here in Clark County. My insurance is actually cheaper because of homeowner discounts. The best thing to do is shop around for car insurance. At 60K a year, you will do fine as long as you dont splurge.

I would not say houses are dirt cheap like they were in 2003 and earlier. I guess people from CA would think that. And actually if you are in MD near No Va you would proabably say the same.

I would say they are about where they were in the summer of 2004. Property taxes are about 1% of your house cost. Approximately.

We transplanted here in 2004. Electricity keeps going up and up so get ready to lose your shirt on that one, especially if you do not have a newer well insulated house. Gas has gone up too. Car registration, other than for a few states is high. I brought a $25,000 car here that was already 4 years old and paid close to $300 to register it. Car insurance is also very high. We pay out the ying yang for that one. One of the highest in the country. Crime varies by what area of the valley you live in.

When I got here I got a 300K house on a 54K salary (, 235K mortgage, good credit, 5.375% interest rate). Sales tax is okay, I have been places where it is higher.

60K will get you a decent home in a nice neighborhood. But DONT expect to have alot of cash left. We didn't have car payments and were pretty tight for a while on 54K.

MD is so nice (I grew up in Northern VA). Why would anyone want to move here from there if you already have a job there? We came here cause I needed a job. I would not willingly move here from MD. Oh and the school system pretty much stinks so, IMHO (others may disagree) I would not bring kids here.
