The Cardinals are the hottest pro sports team in the Valley over the last few years. Stadium sells out, (it did even when the team was not so great) lots of "buzz", especially in the last two years. (there was a lull after the Kurt Warner years for a few years, for sure) It must have been a long while ago that you lived here.

That said, I'll bet it's true that LV residents, who are largely from elsewhere, bring their team loyalties with them. We still see that in PHX, too. And not just with the Cards, but with the other pro teams as well.

Moving from WV to Vegas in a week for a job. I'm not working in a casino, but I will be right on the main strip, near the MGM signature. My wife, a teacher, is staying back east until May to finish out her contract so she can get paid through the summer--we figure that'll be better in the long run, since with the extra income she can afford to look for a job she wants, rather than jump at the first waitressing gig that's available. We figure that with a local address and a post-grad degree, she shouldn't have too much trouble finding something (level of difficulty: she really, really doesn't want to have to teach anymore). Is this a faulty assumption?

Also, our home buying budget is around 200k. I'd of course like to spend less, but we can go that high (I know it's not "high" for everyone) if we have to. For those of you who live or know much about the real estate market, is that a good number to get us 3 bedrooms in a safe neighborhood with relative easy access to the Strip? And since we're dreaming, we're looking for bells and whistles, too, like a pool, updated kitchen, on-suite bathroom...all that stuff you see on House Hunters, basically Again, I'll be working on the Strip, and while I don't want to live right on top of it, I'd like to not have an hour commute every morning, either.

Anyway, you guys are awesome! I've been reading these threads for weeks waiting for the big day to come.

Random extra question: what's the adopted NFL team out there? Where I'm from, for example, depending on the part of the state you're in, you either take the Steelers or the Bengals as your own. Does Vegas claim the Cardinals?
First of all, WELCOME fellow Mountaineer. (I hope you're not a Marshall grad ). I'm from Clarksburg, and attended WVU and Salem College (now Salem International U). I sometimes think I should get personalized plates (ours are front & back BTW), that says "WV2NV64." What part of WV are you from?

You'll find a sports bar or three in this town for just about any team, and I know there are lots of "Stillers" fans here because I see the license plate holders, t-shirts, and bumper stickers, all over the place. Don't see too many Pirates fans though for some reason. I've been here too long, for either, but still have soft spot for Pittsburgh sports teams. It's just too far away to get much news coverage. I'm still waiting to see anything written about the Mounties in the local paper, or hear about them on TV, after 50 years. I am able to watch about 1/3rd to ½ of the WVU basketball and football games on cable TV, and once in a while I see a Marshall game listed (but I'm not a Marshall fan, except if I'm watching them play anyone but WVU, they are who I'd be rooting for).

Anyway, I have a feeling the pay for school teachers here is a lot better than in WEST-by God-Virginia, so don't rule it out. My daughter has taught here for years, and drives all the way from North Las Vegas to Henderson. In Nevada we don't care how far it is, and in our wide open spaces we measure in drive time rather than miles. Anyway, we have over 300,000 students here (I think it's the 5th or 6th largest school district in the country), and most schools are like anywhere else, but there are a few that might have her crying as she gets ready to go to work, so be selective.

I'm guessing, but take it your job will probably be in retail? The son of a friend in Calif. who is one of West Virginia's famous sons, Mayf Nutter, moved here last year to take over a store at The Linq. Nice kid, just like his daddy.

As far as where to live, you'll want as far from The Strip or downtown as possible. Nothing here is that long of a drive unless you are in the "rush" hours of 7:00-8:30AM, and 4:30 to 6:00PM. During those hours stay off the freeways; all other times the freeways move along pretty good. You'll probably want something in the NW, or to the west of Rainbow Bl., probably the Summerlin area, or in SW Las Vegas. Henderson is fine, but I find it too congested, and hotter in summer. Peccole Ranch and Desert Shores don't get talked about much, but if I could go back in time, I would have bought in Desert Shores even though we love our house in the NW. I'd just like to pick it up and move it to a lakeside in Desert Shores which is close to where we are now.

You should be able to get a decent home for around $200,000, or even less, but I'd plan for closer to $300,000. What you'll want to do to save a lot of frustration, is find a realtor that can do your searching for you, and then show you around. DM me if you need some names of good ones.

BTW: You don't have to shovel sunshine, and on my property you won't find a blade of grass to cut. It's the desert and most of us have desert landscaping to save water (and work).

Hahha, I actually did go to Marshall, but grew up in a little town called mannington, about 45 miles from Morgantown. My dads a wvu alum, so they've been my college team my whole life. When it came time for college, though, Marshall offered more money, so that was that. My wife, though, grew up in Putnam county and "bleeds green" as they say. We're both so rabid for our respective teams I swear it must be what a democrat-republican marriage is like!

As for teaching...she's getting her Nevada license, because we think it's a good all-else-fails, but she's never really loved teaching. And I don't think it's fair to ask her to move across the country for my dream job, and expect her to do something she doesn't want to do. So it's there as an option, but only a last resort.

I'm not going to be in retail. I got a corporate job with an international company (not trying to be cagey, just don't think I should be too specific in a public forum about it for various reasons.) it's a Monday-Friday 9-5 right on the strip so I guess I'm just screwed with the commute lol.

And considering what our current house is worth we could technically pay 300, but we're really trying to downsize. Again, if we can find 3 bedrooms, somewhere around 15-1600 sqft, with a community pool and iOS upgrades, we'll be happy campers.

Anyway, thanks for responding so thoroughly! We're really excited to become residents of your city!

My favorite team is any team playing Seattle.

Seriously - teams swap players, swap coaches, swap cities -- sometimes even names.

So what you're really a fan of is their uniforms.

Oh - they change uniforms, too.

So what is it you're actually a fan of?

The game itself. One of the few things in my life that isn't scripted and spoonfed to me.

It is good that your wife realizes she doesnt love teaching and is searching out other avenues. Last thing any district and especially Clark Co. needs is another teacher who isn't passionate about the job. Makes for a long day for all involved!

We moved out here from Maryland in 2013, made it through two summers so far! I lived in Massachusetts 2000-2007 and drank so much local sports kool-aid, it still hasn't worn off Pats and Red Sox! Wooo!

Other than that - ditto to pretty much what everyone else said. Good luck!
