Look up the female Golden Finch. I used to have these in my yard all the time. The males are stunning and the females look like the bird you described.

My first thought was a goldfinch. They are very plentiful where I am originally from (Iowa- the state bird actually), I didn't know they were in this part of the country, but it makes sense as I have seen finch feeders.

We have a pigeon infestation in our neighborhood pooping everywhere. Just saw a robin this morning while watering the roses. Very rare sighting.

Sorry. I didn't think I had to explain that I live in Las Vegas. If it helps, I'm on the extreme east side, east of Hollywood, north of Bonanza, right in the shadow of the Mormon temple. We have at least a dozen kinds of birds in our yard every day, but this one I just can't identify.

Anyway... to the person who suggested goldfinch, it's definitely not. It looks most like a yellow throated warbler but distribution maps I looked at suggest they don't come this far west. Either the maps are wrong or it's another bird that looks just like it. I'll try to be ready with my camera tomorrow so we can get to the bottom of this.

That's a ringneck pheasant. I saw one last year in a neighborhood off N. Decatur. I saw a pair of mallard ducks there too. Most surprising bird I have seen here so far was last summer I saw a white heron standing in a wash over on the east side of town.

I don't think they are common here.

Looks like the goldfinch is common in this part of the US in the winter.
