Please don't shoot the messenger. I am just posting an article from FiveThirtyEight.com which is Nate Silver's website for ESPN.

Las Vegas Is A Terrible Place For An NHL Team | FiveThirtyEight

They do think an NBA franchise makes more sense.

Of course Vegas is a terrible place for an NHL team. It's too hot. The ice will melt.

I really enjoy the FiveThirtyEight.com website. Their articles are all data driven and supported by statistics, unlike most of the tabloid garbage that passes for media these days. I also agree with the conclusion Silver makes;there aren't enough serious hockey fans in Las Vegas to support a team. Also, Las Vegas is a city of mostly immigrants from outside Nevada who retain loyalty to the teams they grew up with. I also think this is more of a basketball city, like Los Angeles, than anything else. There's a lot of California transplants in LV and they enjoy watching the pumpkin pushers.

Seeing as it's not my money investing in an NHL franchise in Las Vegas, I wish them well. I agree that just about ANYWHERE in Canada makes more sense than Las Vegas. It's Canada's game more than ours, after all. Nate didn't mention the angle of NHL fans attending games to see their favorite team -- much like a Boston transplant will attend games in Kansas City to see the Sox or the Patriots.

If we can finally get any kind of professional sports in Las Vegas, maybe other sports might follow. Maybe the new hockey team will be a trailblazer which finally gets an NBA team here. And then maybe the NFL will finally throw us a bone. MLB? That will never, ever, ever happen.

And then again, maybe the new NHL hockey team, "The Las Vegas Bookies" will be plagued by scandal and that will be the final nail in the coffin for pro sports in this city.

Sounds great until someone points out to him that attendance is just not as important as his analysis makes it out to be. Look if someone wanted to make the most money, yes a 2nd team in Toronto or Montreal are the most lucrative options. Problem is the league is 30 other owners who dont want that and would never agree to that. Adding a team where there is already fervent support adds minimal value to the league. If the NHL only cared about full buildings and the best hockey product possible they should go back to the Original Six. However it would sabotage the things which actually make them more money in TV revenue and sponsorship revenue.

Here is how I think the NHL is looking at it. Year after year Las Vegas has one of the highest ratings for the Stanley Cup playoffs. Sure some of that is betting interest, but since betting is so low on the NHL there has to be a belief its something more than that. So they are thinking if the town has a great core of TV watchers, lets put a team there and see how much bigger we make the pie. Give people the chance to see the product live. Create even more fans. Even if all we do is create 2,000 more fans per game than we have now, thats 80,000 new fans over a year. If we put a team in Toronto or Quebec instead our net gain of new hockey fans and people for TV and sponsors to target is zero. No one in those cities is going to decide I am now a hockey fan but I wasnt before.

if the nhl is promoted correctly, as something to do in vegas like a show.. tourists and gamblers will want to see the game.... sports betting + pro sports team = success

and guess which city the fans of other teams will be more likely to make a trip to? it just has to be vegas

Also, a pro NBA team isn't more likely to succeed because of the runnin' rebels - they already are an institution themselves, i doubt the locals would support an nba team significantly more than an nhl team....

vegas locals don't have any real pro sports teams so the first one that kicks off should be well supported

reasons any pro sports team will succeed here is because of the gambling and tourists and visitor team fans.... nothing wrong with that

Oh please don't wish an NBA team on us. We held an NBA event a couple of years ago, and they hated us almost as bad as we hated them

Nate Silver just tweeted "I'm doubling down on my argument that the NHL shouldn't put a team in Vegas" and posted the following article:

How Google Searches Can Predict Hockey Ticket Sales | FiveThirtyEight

He really doesn't want us to have an NHL team

Like anyone is going to listen to him. His analytics would probably say put 5 teams in Toronto and NYC, 4 teams in Montreal and Chicago and a couple teams in Detroit and eastern Canada and contract the rest.
